Heatherwick Studio has unveiled an innovative plan to redevelop the Daegyo Apartments in Yeouido, Seoul. The project aims to replace the aging 1975-era complex with four new residential towers featuring soft, rolling rooflines inspired by the nearby mountains. Departing from the conventional straight high-rise design, the proposed towers emphasize curves and texture to create a warmer, more inviting residential environment. The redevelopment would expand the site from 576 homes to approximately 900, with significant input from hundreds of resident union members. At street level, the design focuses on calm, pedestrian-friendly spaces, incorporating raised site edges to buffer traffic and sunken courtyards to offer tranquil urban retreats. The ground floor is intended to be accessible to both residents and the public, integrating community facilities such as play areas and welfare services. By blending architectural innovation with community-oriented planning, the project aims to provide a livable, aesthetically pleasing environment along the Han River that resonates with Seoul's natural landscape and urban lifestyle.
