The ruined arch from Carnuntum (near the village of Petronell) in the Danube Limes in Austria. It is called Heidentor, Heathens Gate. Carnuntum was a fort (castra) and headquarters of the Pannonian fleet from 50 AD. It became capital of the Pannonia Superior. #RomanFortThursday

A fibula (brooch) decorated with a water bird. From the Heidentor, Egesheim, 5th c. BC.
Water birds appear as ornaments since the Bronze Age. They had a significance in the perception of the sun’s cycle. The birds could follow the sun, they fly in the sky, walk on the earth, swim, and dive in water.

Oh! This is actually one of favorite uses of information signs in an archaeological site. That photo is unedited; what you're looking at is a plexiglass panel with the outline of a reconstruction of the "Heathen's Gate," which matches the perspective of the actual ruin when viewed from there.

Not the same satisfaction level as seeing underneath stuff, but these transparent panels that show complete ruins still hit a spot for me.

I’ve always liked simple information boards at heritage sites. The Heidentor in Carnuntum is a perfect example of balance between information and analog interaction - and it’s just great in itself! We caught the last bit of autumn sunshine there with @agatahaluszko.bsky.social .

The #Heidentor in Petronell-Carnuntum forms the probably most known building from the #RomanEmpire on the grounds of today's #Austria. Historians think the structure next to the #Archaeology Park #Carnuntum was a triumphal monument. #UNESCO #RomanLimes

Next to the Archaeology Park Carnuntum visitors find the ruins of a former Roman triumphal arch, generally known as Heidentor.
