There are no better ways to relax than to have a good night's sleep or a little snooze. Perhaps not so relaxing if you're under pressure to produce an heir and a spare like the lady of this enormous house would have been! Photograph offers a glimpse of the canopy bed at Chatsworth House in the bedroom of the Marquis and Marchioness of Normanby. The frame is covered by a bed drape with shiny teal, tasseled edging, in a lavish fabric of flowers, passionflowers and leaves, from top centre to bottom right corner. Behind this, as if peeping round the curtain, you get a glimpse of a cream cushion with teal edge on the bed and a rich patterned bedspread. The inside of the drape behind the cushion is a soft teal colour. Next to the bed is a small side table with a lamp with cream lampshade glowing amber. The wall of the room has a dado rail with cream-painted panelling below and the most exquisite Chinoiserie wallpaper of bamboo and birds above.
