Hekmatyar was and is an irascible shithead but HIG was very much not the Taliban or what became al-Qaeda
Ofc this kind of person also has no idea who Hekmatyar even is or that anyone existed in Afghan/Muj politics here besides OBL (who barely existed in Afghan politics lmao)

Another example is "The United States funneled a lot of money and material to anti-Soviet fights in Afghanistan, but let the ISI actually distribute and supervise the gear" became "America backed Bin Laden!"
i’ve kinda become a little elitist about this, because it’s an example of a thing you see a lot where stupid people take a pretty nuanced/detailed critique of the conventional Sunday school version of history, & flatten it until they have something *way* more wrong than the default narrative

"Who is Gulbuddin Hekmatyar?" is a question that neither neocons nor the far left can actually answer.
The Taliban being an absurdly parochial Kandahari militia also doesn't really register with most people.

The US didn't arm the Taliban because it did not exist until 1994. The Taliban wasn't even created from organizations that the Pakistanis armed with US funds because again - a key part of Pakistan allowing aid to flow through their country was demanding control over who received it.

Mostly fighting alongside other Arabs, more so than local Afghans.
The Taliban - largely funded by Pakistan because of just how noxious their earlier allies the Americans routed funding through for plausible deniability (Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, et alia) - didn't bring him back from Sudan either.

It also both created the Taliban and before that the Hekmatyar movement that reduced Kabul to rubble in a way the Soviet Army never really tried to do in a decade. Almost all the suffering in Afghanistan since 1980 begins in Pakistan. Truly Vietnamese-Cambodian War level of 'well you earned this.'

Hekmatyar ended being made Prime Minister a couple of times after the Communists collapsed, and spent most of his tenure massacring and rocketing his own capital city.
