Some great pictures of the German Peasants' War out there. This one by Hermann Eichler (1867) shows "The Murder of Count Helfenstein near Weinsberg". Helfenstein (& court) were killed by the rebels in a rare act of violence. But he was a brutal killer whose massacre the peasants were revenging.

Some citizens urge their husbands to kill the nobles to avoid the peasants' wrath. The nobles, including Count Helfenstein and Dietrich von Weiler, take refuge in the Wolfsturm tower and St. John’s Church. After the church is stormed, Weiler is fatally shot, and the remaining nobles surrender. 2/3

The peasants execute the captured nobles, including Helfenstein, by forcing them to run the gauntlet (a punishment normally for lower classes). The countess and her son are spared and sent to Heilbronn, allegedly on a dung cart, after she unsuccessfully begs for her husband’s life.

A portrait of Lillian Spyr Helfenstein, painted by Elsie Southwick Clark. Not very flattering, it has a Gloria Swanson/Sunset Boulevard feel. I prefer Clark’s Portrait of Jane Peterson. Helfenstein’s backstory, if you’re curious, it’s related to my singing book: stacyhorn.com/2013/09/18/j...
