I love bugs but one sneaked up on me once when I moved some wood and I think it was a Hellgramite? It's totally cheating for an insect to look and move like larva, but have crunchy armor and pinchers. I do not approve.

Their aquatic hellgramite stage is so ingraned in my memory from my entomology field class. Seeing one for the first time was unreal

Hope I can see an adult one day

Dobsonflies!!
An illustration of a small biome featuring a rushing stream with mossy blue-gray rocks/stones and a twisted small brown branch. In the biome, there are two large adult eastern dobsonflies resting on top of a rock and the branch just out of the water. These are large insects with brownish bodies and translucent veined wings that resemble those of an antlion or dragonfly, but larger. The male has very long curved mandibles, while the female has much smaller ones. In the water, the larva of this species is illustrated next to the gray stones and pebbles. It has a long segmented body with a large head. Large, fearsome mandibles on the larva are used to grab prey. The entire illustration has a light blue-green background.

Was excited to see a new kind of creature on our river rafting trip on the Indian and Hudson Rivers: hellgramite (the larval form of Dobsonflies-- basically, Sleestak-looking egg-like sacs lazing on an exposed rock).

Submitting THIS as the actual best lure ever made
The Eurotackle Micro Finesse 1.8' Hellgramite (not sponsored, just a fan). This lure I truly believe to be the most versatile, natural looking, bait out there that just absolutely catches everything that swims. The laziest, most lethargic fish will nip at this thing when all else fails. Its the only synthetic lure I've come across that I think would actually out fish the ol' classic worm on a bobber. Its small enough to get most panfish. Its big enough to entice bass and pike. Its natural enough to trick picky fish like trout. Ive gotten steelhead and catfish on these

Hero to Zero
I just got into wading for smallies in our local creek on the Tennessee River system in NW Alabama. It’s been an absolute blast and I’m hooked. Recently, the bite has slowed tremendously, where I went from catching a few smallmouth every time I went to being skunked the last 3 times I’ve fished. Any tips on how to break the skunk streak? I’ve caught the majority of my fish on Yum Hellgramite and Yum Crawdads, split shot with 2/0 hook, just letting the current bounce it on bottom. I’ve tried crank baits, crickhoppers, buzz baits, poppers, etc, with zero
