A very odd looking Helvella mushroom, likely the Western Black Elfin Saddle, Helvella vespertina (love that Latin name!) 🟢🤍🖤🍄📷📸🎞

Maybe the weirdest-looking fungi in these parts are Helvella lacunosa/elfin saddles. Why I love them is their stipe (you know I love stipes!), sometimes, like this one, they almost look like a pen-and-ink illustration.

The only word I think of when I look at this crazy helvella is, "monster." Not in like a scary way, but in a gigantic and mutated way 🐉🍄📷📸🎞

A fungus photo a day: Elfin saddle/Helvella vespertina being parasitized by another fungus, Hypomyces chrysospermus. One of the coolest fungi I’ve ever found. Taken last November. #fungifriends #fungi #mycology #naturephotography
