I'm in the oncology/hematology waiting room. I am the only person wearing a mask outside of the medical staff. I'm getting hard looks from some folks whose ages I overheard as 2 years older than I am. They both look 25 years older than I do & I Iook my age. Hate & sickness really do harm the body.

The answers from the pulmonologist didn’t solve the spasm mystery. I’m really hoping oncology and hematology has answers.

I feel like a walking mystery.

descent. According to the center’s Director of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation: THIS IS A FIX. Other drugs modify the disease, but this is a CURE and they suspect this genetic treatment will replace bone marrow transplants in time. In sickle cell disease, a gene

I’m in a pediatric hematology oncology physician group on another site & the fact that kids with cancer & US citizenship are being deported was brought up & the comments section was full of similar stories of kids completely lost to followup the last few months bc of this hellhole we all live in now

When I worked in peds hematology/oncology, we saw a lot of kids with sickle cell anemia (which overwhelmingly affects Black people). SO MANY nurses used to roll their eyes at children!!! having a pain crisis and asking for specific opioids because they KNEW WHAT WORKED.
Just going to add to this: it’s also people of color, and especially Black people, who are much more likely to be labeled drug seekers and much less likely to be believed about their pain.
This is exactly why so many disabled patients are terrified to go to the hospital.

Terrified to give up autonomy and control to those who would mock them for clicks.

The utter disrespect for our lives is too common within the medical system.

That was the highlight of the day but the day isn’t over. I see oncology and hematology again today. They’ll tell me what my blood showed although the pulmonologist has just ordered more blood tests.

Everyone wants my blood. Yay me.

Back to the books. Spent the day reading old hematology oncology papers.

You’d think most people care about kids w/ cancer but you’d be wrong.

Our medical reimbursement system sure doesn’t.

Pediatric hematology oncology is the 4th lowest paying specialty overall & is 1 of 5 pediatric specialties where 3 extra years of training is rewarded with a lower salary.

They have me on the blood side and said that’s a good thing. It means it’s not oncology, it’s hematology. The dept is called oncology and hematology and they wouldn’t tell me over the phone why I was sent here. But it’s a good sign that they took me to the blood side.
