I watched a hemicolectomy once with aaaages of painstaking cutting and careful stitching of intestines, and when all the intricacies were done they just dumped a bucket of fluid into the cavity, shoved all the organs back in and agitated a bit before closing it up! My baby nurse face was 😨

One of my favourite things about teaching robotic surgery @imrasurgical … getting to mind delegates very cute Bubs while they operate….great enthusiasm at the robotic right hemicolectomy course today. #wideningaccess #roboticsurgery @liangrhea.bsky.social

Doctor gave me the all clear to roam about the cabin so look out! If you need a colonoscopy go to Dr. Makhani or Dr. Magner in L.A. -- they are THE BEST. Makhani found the tumor (benign) & Magner did the hemicolectomy to get it out. I get reg checkups but STILL had this. Get your pooper checked plz.

surgeon: it's your first right hemicolectomy, right? you did great holding the endoscope, let's take a picture together!
me: yeah sure! (preparing to take selfies)

I am going into hospital in the morning to have my bowel cancer operation. A right hemicolectomy with anamastosis to the small intestine. I have a very small tumour on my appendix but this operation should prevent spread to other parts and organs.

Not looking forward to it. TBH 🥺🤢

One year ago today, I went in for cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with a planned hemicolectomy and HIPEC. This surgery, dubbed the mother of all surgeries, was over 10 hours long. It was the hope that I might reach No Evidence of Disease (NED) through this that carried me through. #coloncancer #stageIV

I’m finishing up my recovery from a Left Hemicolectomy. Not cancer thankfully. All back to normal. Surfing tomorrow for first time in 6 weeks.

Yep, get your colonoscopy!

For those interested, it’s been four weeks since I had a Laparoscopic Right Hemicolectomy to remove a large caecal tumour. 🤮I know.
The operation doesn’t seem like a big deal to start with but the recuperation time is longer than you think.

I’m still at least a couple of weeks away from ‘normal’.

Deep learning neural network prediction of postoperative complications in patients undergoing laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with or without CME and CVL for colon cancer: insights from SICE (Società Italiana di Chirurgia Endoscopica) CoDIG data - Techniques in Coloproctology
Background Postoperative complications in colorectal surgery can significantly impact patient outcomes and healthcare costs. Accurate prediction of these complications enables targeted perioperative management, improving patient safety and optimizing resource allocation. This study evaluates the application of machine learning (ML) models, particularly deep learning neural networks (DLNN), in predicting postoperative complications following laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for colon cancer. Methods Data were drawn from the CoDIG (ColonDx Italian Group) multicenter database, which includes information on patients undergoing laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with complete mesocolic excision (CME) and central vascular ligation (CVL). The dataset included demographic, clinical, and surgical factors as predictors. Models such as decision trees (DT), random forest (RF), and DLNN were trained, with DLNN evaluated using cross-validation metrics. To address class imbalance, the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) was employed. The primary outcome was the prediction of postoperative complications within 1 month of surgery. Results The DLNN model outperformed other models, achieving an accuracy of 0.86, precision of 0.84, recall of 0.90, and an F1 score of 0.87. Relevant predictors identified included intraoperative minimal bleeding, blood transfusion, and adherence to the fast-track recovery protocol. The absence of intraoperative bleeding, intracorporeal anastomosis, and fast-track protocol adherence were associated with a reduced risk of complications. Conclusion The DLNN model demonstrated superior predictive performance for postoperative complications compared to other ML models. The findings highlight the potential of integrating ML models into clinical practice to identify high-risk patients and enable tailored perioperative care. Future research should focus on external validation and implementation of these models in diverse clinical settings to further optimize surgical outcomes.

Had a hemicolectomy ~10 years ago, which was quite the ordeal. Glad you're back home, even if there's still some recovery ahead for you.

Had a hemicolectomy a few years ago. They sent me home on the strong stuff. I could only manage 2 days on it, because *nothing* hurt, & it freaked me out. ANYTHING coulda been going on in my body, & I wouldn't have know. The post-op pain was pretty bad, but I could deal with pain better than none.

I had a hemicolectomy in '17, and was on heavy meds. I was truly unnerved by the lack of pain. I wanted the meds to keep my ripped up innards from hurting, but to, like, have no pain *anywhere*? Hands, feet, legs, hips, neck? It was weird af. I didn't trust it. I'm too used to everything hurting.
