At first glance I probably couldnt confidently tell you if the tayra was herpestidae or mustelidae or a weird pitbull otter hybrid created by aliens

Weighing in at 4.1kg (~19 stoats), the MARSH MONGOOSE is a one of the most aquatic members of the family Herpestidae! They have a thick undercoat beneath their blackish-brownish fur to help them stay dry. Aptly, they're often called the "water mongoose". #StoatsAsMeasurement #2025MMM

Mongooses are NOT mustelids! Things I just learned. They're in the family Herpestidae. They just have Big Mustelid Energy. #2025MMM
NEXT UP: #7 seed MARSH MONGOOSE (Atilax paludinosus) vs. #10 seed QUOKKA (Setonix brachyurus) #2025MMM (battle by @midwesternmouse.bsky.social)

Forgot the alt text, so: a fossa, a hyena, and a mongoose.

Eupleridae (Madagascar carnivorans), herpestidae (mongooses) and hyanidae are each other’s closest relatives.

Meanwhile herpestidae is when Feliformia copied their homework to create its own set of noodle critters!

Well damn, all of the family Herpestidae is in Africa and Southern Asia. So, nothing even related to meerkats.
Vibes wise, maybe a local species of ground squirrel could work for Arizona? I feel like those are the closest to a meerkat of what I can think of in my area.
here's a fun question for you: what would your fursona be if it had to an animal that *actually lives in your area*?

hard mode: no domesticated animals with a consequentially global range--that would mean, for example, canid and ungulate species have to be species actually found in the wild

You are correct, this is all excellent. No notes!
Also I love the example of the herpestidae vs mustelidae.
Sometimes you just gotta solve your problems with a stretched out pointy-faced carnivore, and I love that Team Cat and Team Dog both did that.

Snakes and mongooses don't go along well, even when the former is a robotic naga.

Alas, I am only somewhat related to that in the family Herpestidae… 😔

Meerkats are not cats, but they are in the Herpestidae (mongoose family).
This family is part of Feliformia, so closer to cats than dogs.
Both branches of Carnivora have “tubular and prone to mischief” families. On the dog side, that’s Mustelids (weasels).
Early Carnivora were also sneaktubes!

I was entertained for 90 minutes. Loosely based on a true story about a cryptozoological Herpestidae.

Mayhaps you could use the Yellow Mongoose as a basis? They’re stoat-like but not really, and are a bit less well known, could be a fun oddball species to work from! Not as many distinct markings either as in other mongoose species like meerkats or the banded mongoose

I focused on animals that were ecologically meaningful to the question. That meant animal-eating (or 'faunivorous') mammals around the same general size as the thylacine.

I also gathered up a range of ecologic info: diet, prey size, body mass. I had to understand all the comparatives!
