If I said, 'I have a goo on me.' or 'Giz a Goo.'

Would you know what I mean?

Listen!

(in the HibernoEnglish sense)
If you were asked to translate Beowulf into modern English, how would you translate ‘Hwæt’?

Yup. When you have ignored all the “Careful now, lads” warnings because you don’t understand HibernoEnglish :)

Nothing annoys me as much as 'folx' from people on this side of the Atlantic, but Irish people using 'y'all' instead of a perfectly respectable 'ye' or 'yous' (standard Hibernoenglish) is up there.
Minor point but I really hate this performative “y’all” people do to try and appear more folksy. I don’t type in a Yorkshire accent and I did people would rightly tell me to shut up.

Piggybacking off a different thread, this is my first line of Beowulf (even more HibernoEnglish than Heaney).

Lads! The Spear-Danes from ages back
were great fellas altogether, and so were their kings.
Sure haven't we all got a story about them.

In HibernoEnglish, the only true form, we would say he's an absolute dote.

Dear #irishbluesky and #blueskyireland and #ireland folk:

We have an absolutely fabulous and hilarious take on the English language and some of our expressions are purest poetry.

Let's get a thread up and running of some of the best hiberno english expressions.

We owe it to @davidmccullough.bsky.social , FloridaDave, to show the infinite gradations of subtle weariness in HibernoEnglish as applied to gubbimint

This was a question my father Fred frequently asked of my mother Anne

#Gaeilge or Irish often frames a question in the negative so the respondent can feel more at ease.

Nach bhfuil an dinnéar réidh fós - sounds quite normal to me but outside Ireland it sounds odd

4)"Is the dinner not ready yet?"

You've heard it. Maybe you've said it. It's not bad English. It's Irish.

Mollie Guidera explains why on this week's Irish Stew.

I’m a big that fan (Yaaay, that fans)

It’s a load bearing word :)

It also feels more natural to me but then again hibernoenglish is a strange haunted language :)

I finally got round to framing this tea towel I bought at the Irish in Britain exhibit last year. Hilariously, my daughter read it and was like Oh yeah I know most of these between you (Mayo) and daddy (Down) 😂 that made me very happy!

I have once more to respond to the HibernoEnglish word “a hames” to describe the fractal and constantly growing mess we are now faced with.

A mess is, well, messy but resolvable. A hames is “let us never speak of this again” territory.
