In 1821, Nat Turner briefly escaped from slavery, seeking freedom from the oppressive conditions he endured. However, after spending about a month in hiding, he made the unusual decision to voluntarily return to his enslaver. Turner believed he had received a divine revelation instructing him to remain in bondage until he was called to fulfill a greater mission. Convinced that God had a plan for him, he saw his return not as a failure but as a necessary step toward a prophesied uprising. This experience further solidified his belief that he was chosen to lead his people in a divinely sanctioned rebellion. A decade later, this conviction culminated in the infamous 1831 slave revolt, which Turner saw as the fulfillment of his spiritual destiny.
