#High-Luminosity-LHC
The Large Hadron Collider is shutting down but when it comes back it will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine! 💥

Looking forward to the High-Luminosity LHC (technically more *luminous,* in the sense of having way more proton collisions, rather than necessarily more powerful) in 2030!
So long #LHC and thank you for all the collisions 👋

Today, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, comes to the end of an extraordinary chapter in its scientific journey.

Proton collisions at the LHC end on a high(-luminosity) note 💫

During this year, an exceptional volume of data was collected at a collision energy of 13.6 teraelectronvolts (TeV).

Watch to find out more about what this means. 👇

Today, CERN has begun Long Shutdown 3 to upgrade the Large Hadron Collider into the High-Luminosity LHC. The 4-year project will boost collision rates tenfold, helping scientists hunt for dark matter. The timeline accounts for past delays from COVID-19 and complex detector upgrades.

The #LHC at #CERN concludes its Run 3 today and is shutting down for Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). ⚛️

It's preparing for the upgrade to the High-Luminosity LHC (HiLumi LHC), which from 2030 will be much more “luminous”.🧪 🔭

(“Luminous” means many more proton collisions per second — not visible light).
So long #LHC and thank you for all the collisions 👋

So thrilled to read that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the vast machine that gifted us w/ a view into the world of the impossibly small, is now being upgraded and re-purposed to do even better!

And it should be ready to go by 2030.

Something worth sticking around for!! 📰🧪
