“The Onward March of American Women” by Hildreth Meière (American) and Lynn Fausett (American) – Oil on linen / 1933 – Smith College Museum of Art (Northampton, Massachusetts) #WomenInArt #HildrethMeiere #LynnFausett #SmithCollegeMuseumOfArt #WomensSuffrage #AmericanArt #MuralArt #art #WomenArtists
A procession of white women moves confidently across “The Onward March of American Women,” celebrating the expansion of women’s rights and opportunities in the United States. At left, suffragists carry banners reading “Votes for Women,” while a woman dressed in a tailored suit steps forward with a briefcase, representing women’s growing participation in business and professional life. Another figure raises a blue curtain marked “Peace,” revealing a gathering of people beneath radiant sunlight. At right, Clio, the classical Muse of History, sits draped in red, recording these achievements in an open book. Behind her, an inscription declares that women advance through education, suffrage, and economic freedom toward greater social justice. American artist Hildreth Meière created the mural with fellow American artist Lynn Fausett for Chicago’s 1933 Century of Progress International Exposition. Commissioned by the National Council of Women, the original three-part composition traced a century of American women’s achievements from 1833 to 1933. Meière, celebrated for her Art Deco murals and architectural decorations, had just two months to complete the commission. Fausett, her longtime assistant and an accomplished muralist, contributed substantially to its execution, and both artists signed the finished work. The surviving section, depicting approximately 1913–1933, emphasizes the women’s suffrage movement, professional advancement, international peace, and hopes for a more equitable future. The women’s voting-rights victory of 1920 provides an important backdrop, although discriminatory laws and practices continued to prevent many women, particularly women of color, from exercising that right. The mural reflects both the optimism and limitations of its time, presenting progress as the result of collective organization rather than individual accomplishment. Originally part of a much larger installation, this final section is the only one known to survive.
