It’s a Hardknott life. Not quite a hillfort but certainly a fort in the hills! #HillfortsWednesday

Looking onto the remains of the ditch and ramparts of the Iron Age Fort at Thetford in Norfolk. The view is taken from the Norman motte and bailey castle which was built within the Iron Age earthworks. 📸 My own. #HillfortsWednesday #Thetford #Norfolk

Castle Crag in Borrowdale, Cumbria. The top of the crag was a hillfort from the 8th to 5th centuries BC (Iron Age). Borrowdale was named after the fort by later Norse settlers [Borg (fort) and Dalr (dale or valley)].

To celebrate #HillfortsWednesday here's a rather splendid recreation of the 2.8ha bivallate Cadbury Camp #Somerset in its Iron Age heyday 😍

Finally it's #HillfortsWednesday 🥳

Slightly distracted on our biking trip in April along the Dyffryn Dysynni Valley in north Wales by the towering bluff of Craig yr Aderyn (Bird's Rock) inland promontory fort 😮

An awesome Iron Age presence in the landscape 🤩 One to visit 👌

The wonderful Iron Age hillfort of Cadbury Camp #Somerset from the air looking NE

Not to be confused with Cadbury Castle (South Cadbury) or Cadbury Hill (Cadbury-Congresbury) the Camp has views into South Wales and inland to the Mendips

The best preserved and one of the most complete Roman camps in Britain? Ardoch Roman Fort in Perthshire has managed to survive the onslaught of the plough thanks to Sir William Stirling who purchased the site in late 1700s and erected enclosures to block farming and ploughing #HillfortsWednesday

The Romans built a series of large marching camps in the area, outlines still visible, perhaps during the initial campaign in northern Scotland by Julius Agricola in AD83. A fort was then established enclosing an area of about 2.5 hectares (6.2 acres) #HillfortsWednesday

The 8 hectare multivallate hillfort of Eggardon @nationaltrust.org.uk #Dorset is a muscular piece of Iron Age engineering

The majority of hollows still visible inside the enclosure, however, appear to be post medieval quarry pits

Hooray it's #HillfortsWednesday 🥳

This is the final approach through the gateway passage of Tre'r Ceiri hillfort, Gwynedd 😮🫣

This powerful, long-lived hilltop defended town dominated the Llyn Peninsula, home to the Gangani or 'Geese People' 🪿🪿⚔️

It was partly restored in the 80s & 90s
