#Phenomenal #Hismaic inscription just edited for #OCIANA by J. Norris. The text is by a man with a Greek name of the lost tribe of ʿ𝒂̄𝒅. He calls on the goddess Allāt to be mindful of his friends 𝒚𝒉𝒅 “Judah” (Yəhûdâ) and 𝒚𝒔ʿ “Jesus” (Yēšûaʿ).

‎A common prayer to the gods in the pre-Islamic Arabian inscriptions is sm‘ l-y “give ear to me”, so samī‘ “hearing (of prayers)” is an expected divine epithet. This Hismaic txt attests the name: ‘abdu-samī‘ “slave of (the one who) hears” anticipating the Islamic name عبد السميع.

A fun puzzle. This Hismaic inscription contains a unique prayer: 𝒉 𝒍𝒕𝒎 ʾ𝒕 ʾ𝒉̣𝒚𝒍𝒕 'O Allāt you are ʾḥy-Allāt! The text seems to be equating a divine name with its epithet. The first element ʾḥy must have something to do with 'life', but what is it exactly?

I get e-mails like this from academia.edu and a chill goes down my spine.

For heaven's sake, my doing a lot of reading and research on All Things Mesopotamian for the past few years and posting a lot about it on social media in no way makes me a reliable reference source to be cited!

Don't know about Hismaic verb forms but could it be cognate to أَحْيَا or הֶחֱיָה, like "life-bringer?" Seems like an appropriate verb for a deity
