Delighted to see that @drhelenroche.bsky.social first article in the field of #HistoricalGameStudies is out now, having read an earlier version (and re-read this one) I do recommend it!! 🎲

Secret Hitler and the ghosts of Weimar: a ludic case study in ‘Hitlersploitation’?
Juxtaposing recent advances in Historical Game Studies with historical research on the commercialisation of the Third Reich in contemporary culture, this article treats the board game Secret Hitler...

Hey #wargaming friends, people dipping toes into #HistoricalGameStudies, educators wanting to try out #GamingthePast random folk, whoever. Love it when people reach out with a cold DM/Message/Email and ask a question or for guidance in forays. I get to help and it doesn't involve writing a book!

Official publication day for my long awaited Hades chapter in this edited volume on classical reception (edited by Anastasia Bakogianni and Luis Unceta Gómez) is July 22, but the volume is out and available now! Lots of other great articles in the volume too: www.degruyter.com/document/doi...

Anyway, now I'm thinking about how to historicize "Mafia." Obviously, it was designed in a very specific historical context, but the game itself is also devoid of historical specificity. How should I get students thinking about the game's historicity? #gamestudies #historicalgamestudies 4/4

#HistoricalGameStudies folks are the best - we have a great community and folks are so generous to each other! @ludensprof.bsky.social has super ideas on teaching with - and having students build - games, as does @gamingthepast.bsky.social!
Also be willing to use widely available and cheap mobile games or mobile ports (e.g. 80 Days from bsky.app/profile/inkl...) and - though it's rarer these days - keep an eye out for in-browser games, like the first Curious Expedition from @maschimensch.bsky.social : play.curious-expedition.com.

Revision #1 is in! Very pleased with my cute new sentences here. I needed to explain a little more, within #HistoricalGameStudies and #GameStudies in general, the real innovation of game I'm studying. #gtp 🗃️

Lunch, then I'll start tackling the other revision (on Haiti & games beyond ACFC).
I think I'm about ready to send this revision in. Look at the gorgeous sentence I came up with once I moved Kishonna Gray out of my footnotes & into text. And my conclusion is a lot more fleshed out than when half of it sat in my head as implicit (thanks to the eds for pushing me to lengthen it)!

Year 5 of the #SlaveRevoltonScreen book tour starts today.😁 I'm recording a Film & History 🗃️ podcast this morning. More work on #HistoricalGameStudies is coming out but SROS is still one of the only books on games by a historian, so I still get invites! 🙌 Glad to be encouraging others to work on 🎮!

If you're interested in history 🗃️, esp of WWI...
OR #VideoGames #HistoricalGameStudies ...
OR Star Wars....

you should be following the brilliant and generous @chriskempshall.bsky.social if you aren't already!

Here's a thread of some of his greatest hits.
Having seen other academics do this, I thought it might be good to just do a mega thread of my various bits of writing/work etc with links so people can track stuff down 🗃️

I'll present it in the following order:

1) First World War history
2) Historical Computer Games
3) Public History
4) Star Wars

Games & Culture is one possibility. OR depending on how theoretical you make it, you could push a "traditional" journal to pay attention to this area of the memory of the Vietnam War by publishing its first #HistoricalGameStudies piece... #gtp

Please remember, this has always been a designer-side framework, NOT an attempt to guess at player experience.
As you probably know, my work is on the #HistoricalGameStudies side and #gamingthepast side for history education. 2/

Because when now-gone Journal of Digital Humanities wanted to pick it up, felt like a real validation I had things to say abt #HistoricalGameStudies not just history games in history ed. And, like so many of you, I definitely get impostor syndrome. So it felt good to develop in this direction. 2/

So I get to start drafting "Designing Historical Games for Classrooms: A Practical Guide for Educators" with Routledge. Excited and a wee bit daunted (mostly excited because it's not like I haven't written before, but the blank page is always monolithic). 2/

As I edit and article, wondering if I can get away with changing my preferred term "experimenting deities" for player agents of abstract strategy games to "Fool around and find out!" games?🤔

It's close enough to the weekend, insofar as I'm in the midst of parent teacher conferences and looking forward to a half day today. So let's fill digital space w some conversation about #HistoricalGameStudies and #GamingthePastinEd (come on, #gamestudies friends; don't you wonder about history?) 1/

Hi #gamestudies and #historicalGameStudies and #GamingthePastinEd folk. Let's mix things up with a weekday ask-me-anything about games and history in an out of education. Seriously, if you've ever had a huge or nit-picky question, I'll do my best to answer it thoughtfully. (re-skeets appreciated)
October 31, 2023 at 11:31 AM
Alright #gamestudies folks and #HistoricalGameStudies.
Has anyone written or encountered an English article/chapter/whatever that treats Sid Meier's Pirates? I think my friend, scholar @eugenpfister.bsky.social may be the only one. I'd love to put it in GTP bibliography if there are others.
That can‘t be true! 😳

German-writing scholars, wherever you are doing it, are such a huge part of #HistoricalGameStudies and #GamingthePastinEd
If only I had retained reading skills from my grad reading course (such an American!), but so many of you, my German-writing colleagues and friends are very kind to me anyway
@akgwds.bsky.social for video games and Boardgame_historian for board games (no Bluesky at the moment, but here is the Instagram channel: instagram.com/boardgame_hi...). They are both from Germany, but have also content in English.

On a slightly personal note, we have not yet adopted a doggy after our beloved Theo and I am also bacheloring for the weekend hence all the #HistoricalGameStudies posts this morning. I mean, that, and because I have a presentation to finish prepping and Apollo forbid I ever stay completely on task.
