#History&Humanities
We are told that, under stress, the humanities must be sacrificed. But amidst a war of aggression scholars in Ukraine have undertaken one of the most ambitious knowledge projects of our time. It's a privilege to be involved with Ukrainian History Global Initiative

I keep trying to write something eloquent and just being tired.
History matters. Philosophy matters. Languages and literature matter. Indigenous studies matter. Arts and humanities and social sciences matter. All of them.

History is part of Humanities, and they do not want people studying or researching Humanities.

The #1 lesson from yesterday’s blowout:
Humanities majors killed on the job market

A computer engineer with no contextual knowledge of history is why the humanities is so important

This is what happens when the humanities atrophy and people get their history from 300

History majors have lower unemployment than computer science majors.

Folks with humanities graduate degrees are more sought after by corporate recruiters than those with MBAs.

Study history! Get a job!

This is why we teach the humanities, specifically history. For the culture.

However because the humanities are largely done in plain language - a cutting edge work of history is entirely legible to a non-historian reader, even if they may not fully understand it - we've been dealing with the practitioners of 'vibe humanities' (in my case, 'vibe history') for a long time. 5/

We could teach more of all the kinds of history if we weren’t systematically defunding the humanities and the public universities

It's so weird to see guys rail against the humanities if you know anything about higher ed. Like--you won. The humanities are gutted. All the colleges belong to you.

And still it's not enough. History *classes* must be demonized. Fash-ass brain.
the thing is, I went back to grad school to get an MPH when I realized I needed the training, and its always stood me in good stead in my work as a historian and interdisciplinary scholar, so I find this question of "would a history student ever study engineering" really unproductive

I for one am tired of Humanities academics pushing their elitist agenda of basic literacy, independent thinking and an elementary knowledge of human history

Of course science, history, and humanities are off the table. Why would you want someone to be intelligent and well rounded?

"is AGP a third sex, the greatest thread in the history of the humanities--"
"okay but my culture has a respected third sex who doesn't think of themselves as women, here's one to prove it"

"I'm a repper manmoder rapehon and I understand why women despise me"

Yes! Humanities majors get jobs!

Which is quite separate from humanities *departments* getting funding. We're under-funded for ideological reasons, alongside mistaken cultural assumptions about employability.

But our majors get jobs! At a high rate! History is a *good* major, so is Classics!

People do not seem to think that understanding history deeply helps with understanding present problems, and it’s fascinating to see how the erosion of the humanities has contributed to this.

Courses covering epistemology, ethics, history and philosophy of science, the history of the university (it all began with, checks notes, what we call today humanities), and lots of other cool humanities offerings would clear up a lot. We’re on the same team, join us!

What does a university have that Google cannot offer its workers? Art History departments, Classics departments, History departments, Music Theory, etc. The humanities are what distinguishes universities in an AI economy. Universities defunding the humanities are digging their own graves.

Humanities are the antidote to the empire’s greatest weapon: ignorance. They expose how history is weaponized to justify conquest, and how culture is polished to erase resistance. When you attack the humanities, you attack the very tools people use to unlearn oppression.

We are barraged with constant cultural messaging from politicians, administrators, media about how useless history and humanities degrees are, how we should all be studying STEM or business. Then students do not study humanities or history, which is taken as confirmation of the initial premise.
History was the most popular major at Princeton just 25 years ago, but it's fallen hard -- from a high of 11.8% to just 3.8%.

In totally unrelated news, I have been on the Princeton History faculty for those same 25 years.
