model painting hobbyists will go like "I am hyped about this paint" and it's a bottle of acrylic paint but it's more opaque and flows slightly better than similar colors from other ranges

Both the ATC and hobbyists calculate TDOA across the ADS-B receiver network to verify reported positions using multilateration. If the transmitter isn’t near where it claimed to be when it sent the signal it’s immediately flagged.

"campist cheering for Chinese AI labs to rip off western intellectual property" is a Type of Guy that i feel like *should* exist, and i'm sure they're out there, but instead i usually just see "fuck all AI research, including Chinese labs, including academics/hobbyists"

Right, and both scenarios are fatally flawed, because neither accounts for the actual ADS-B transmissions sent from some transponder actually located in space and time and actually received by physical antennas and reported by hobbyists to ADS-B Exchange.

All the hobbyists looking at their Pile of Potential in fear, wondering if that counts as 'Plastic Fetish'...

Not everyone has paint or brushes. Be nice to less-equipped hobbyists.

Franklin Leonard: "Hobbyists write one script, rewrite it for five years, and expect greatness. That doesn’t work. What does work is: here’s a great script, well executed. Here’s what I’m doing next. And the one after that. The constant flow of stories — that’s what this is about."

A big part of this attitude is arrogance rather than mustache-twirling evil. These people think AI is categorically more important than anything else there's ever been, especially personal computing, property, art, hobbyists, etc. so society needs to abandon all that and organize around AI companies

Technically it does also transmit the position and velocities from internal systems, and that’s what’s reported, but actual position is easy to triangulate over dense population centers and can be done from open source data because of all the hobbyists with ADS-B receivers. Very difficult to fake.

Starfront Observatories lets hobbyists around the world control telescopes, explore dark skies and capture images of the universe.

But again, if the plane was never real, the dozens of hobbyists who collect live ads-b transmissions in the West Palm Beach area for services like ADS-B Exchange wouldn’t have received corresponding radio transmissions.

Computer hobbyists give the worst advice sometimes, because not everyone has computer as a hobby.

Question for Lego hobbyists:

Is there a plastic polish builders use to refurbish bricks? i can live with some scuff marks but i have window panes and some nice pieces id like to revitalize

i recently realized something: i price my modules as "4 hours of fun for ~5 people" but TTRPG hobbyists look at them as "half an hour of reading".

How many visual artists still use Spotify?

A lot of songwriters have been sounding the alarm of tech bros turning professionals into hobbyists for the last 15 or so years.
when artists said this in 2022 they were laughing at us, so 🤷‍♀️

(but realtalk, I'm glad more people are waking up to it now)

i want to see the timeline where electric cars have been dominant since before WW1 and only a few hobbyists ever made gas cars
November 2, 2026 at 8:01 PM
Then there’s the photo of a plane and the ADS track of the aforementioned place as it flew from Texas. The number of hobbyists with ADS trackers is astonishing (picture of mine below). This would require a conspiracy of thousands.

if this is real, it's a shitty way to do it. source ports of GPL Doom, recomps that won't run without your own ROM, fan decomps: that's how old games stay alive, mostly thanks to unpaid hobbyists. ban the app store knockoffs, sure. a hidden flag with no off switch that sweeps up the rest is lazy.

In the future, hunters and gun hobbyists will set out a single .30-06 round by their rifle on 9/9 for good fortune on their next hunt or range trip, a day called "Kirking Eve", though the exact reason for the tradition will be then be somewhat forgotten

A group of underground weather hobbyists confront the one question that has perpetually dogged mainstream meteorologists, does Punxsutawney Phil accurately predict the coming of spring? Our experts take a look.

I think the "I want my commissions to be accessible" sentiment is valid... When you're a hobbyist doing it on your free time, being commissioned by people who are hobbyists having fun. Both can exist, I don't know why it's hard to understand for some people
