Hōkūleʻa was a project decades later to prove Heyerdahl wrong, the Polynesian Voyaging society not only did the voyage with period accurate navigation but also circumnavigated the earth *and* is still in use half a century later.

Eddie Aikau, a legendary Hawaiian lifeguard and big-wave surfer, vanished on March 17, 1978, while attempting to paddle for help after the Hōkūleʻa voyaging canoe capsized. As Waimea Bay's first official lifeguard, he saved over 500 people famously losing zero lives on his watch during his tenure.
