Holloways - sunken lanes - are found throughout our ancient landscapes

This one near us, with the lovely name of All Fools Lane

A 9.5 mile run on an undulating course (aka hilly - there are no flat routes here) which incorporated holloways - stretches of old, sunken road. They are inherently spooky and wonderful #running #runchat

I've always been fascinated by England's holloways, or sunken lanes, and your photos brought them to mind. Something about them just ignites my imagination.

The word hohlay means “sunken path”. For thousands of years, people used these holloways with their animals. paths on these worn, sunken tracks. These are not just paths, but echoes carved into the earth

Following the forgotten ways ... ‘the trods, bridleways, drovers’ roads, corpse roads, lonnings, ginnels, holloways, meanderings, beggars’ walks, priests’ paths, military roads…’ @postalpathsguy.bsky.social
Always exciting when it's new book time. Tonight it's a new audiobook and I plumped for The Postal Paths by Alan Cleaver.

The cart tracks of the North York Moors. Last year’s devastating fire on Fylingdales Moor has revealed archaeology in graphic detail. Medieval holloways and seventeenth and eighteenth-century cart tracks are visible for the first time and look as fresh as the day they were made.

Took me right back to these beauties photographed in 2019, the first just south of Moretonhampstead, the second a few miles further south towards North Bovey, and such a green velvet turf to walk on. Was spoiled for holloways that day #dartmoor #devon

I went to Dorset and spied with my little eyes: holloways, ammonite fossils, excellent beach-side fish and chips, Little Toller books, Dorset apple cake and clotted cream for breakfast, a swannery, compass jellyfish, icecream, farm cats, and @robertculshaw.bsky.social.

Absolute banger of a day. So lucky. Day off with the ladies tomorrow. Symondsbury Estate and a little stroll in the holloways.

Having said that everything has a comeback. I saw an advert for the twentieth anniversary of The Holloways the other day and thought, why? So you can feel as ripped off as the first time round?

The Bluetones, what was the point?
Someone at the NME described them as Britpop salad days group and, yeah, that fits.
