I just put rice in the taco beef to stretch it. While I’m glad my mom and my HomeEC II teacher taught me depression-era skills, I am pissed at the oligarchs for making me use them, and I REALLY don’t want to have to dust off any more. And god help us if I have to use margarine again.

As someone who had to take HomeEc in 1990: hard agree. I learned a bit more than the minimal basic cooking and sewing skills, how to do laundry, how to clean and care for things; I’m almost 50 and I’m still learning new useful stuff all the time, but I seem to have had a real head start.
my similar boomer opinion is that i think “home economics” or whatever the equivalent is ought to be mandatory for students in middle and high school.
boomer opinion i have is that there are way more young adults out there who legit don’t know how to take care of themselves in very basic ways than we’d probably be comfortable with knowing

I was a young girl in the 1970s. I can’t even begin to explain how much she (and those with her doing the work) meant to where I went. I played little league with the boys. I didn’t have to take HomeEc. I had bodily autonomy. I went to law school. I had many more choices than previous generations

Hard agree. At my high school, girls could only take HomeEc, and boys could only take AutoMech - until a classmate of mine threatened to sue; she was already a solid household manager, but she wanted to learn how to work on cars. She was the first one allowed, and that was 1993, I think?
Also, Home Ec should have been something taught to all students, not just females. It was always a silly bias.

In my house, meatloaf was never on the menu rotation when I was growing up. I made one in HomeEc in grade 8. I didn't understand why this deliciousness had been withheld from me. Anyway, I just made a meatloaf for dinners this week 😀

Especilly because HomeEc didn't teach this stuff (in my experience). We mostly learned how to use a sewing machine.

Under my benevolent authoritarian rule, K-12 will include HomeEc again and you won't be able to graduate high school without being able to make 3 healthy dishes that receive passing marks from a jury of your peers. That and know how to sew on a button and do a basic budget.

We got rid of HomeEc and shop classes because we thought parents were functional and gave a shit about raising functioning adults.
Not only are the parents reading at a below 6th grade level, they cannot teach their kids how to do basic cooking and repair.

I'd say it's definitely uncommon, but not rare. Maybe more old-fashioned. Like, "meatloaf night" was a legible concept for decades!
And, as much as it had heinous negative gendered aspects to it, I still use lessons I learned in HomeEc about food prep and shop planning all the time.

Homework is not just worksheets. Like @adriancjax.blacksky.app said, I remember having to sew a pillow or bring a dish for HomeEc. Homework is supposed to help strengthen in class work. It shouldn’t be excessive but it has its place.

This & learning some sewing & other little hobby tasks in HomeEc. It’s crazy to me that the actual life skills are considered optional while so much of schooling is learning things that you never end up using again later.

"HomeEc" was at least half a year in 8th grade for boys and girls in the 70's. The other half of the year was "Shop" class with some woodwork, metal work, drafting and electric. The "HomeEc" portion included Cooking, Menu Planning, Sewing, Budgeting, etc. This was in the Midwest.

In 7th -9th grade in my cohort you had to take TLC, woodshop 1/3 the year, homeEc food handling 1/3 year, and typing 1/3 year. Looking back it's helped quite a bit doing job transfers job training and trying to balance my budget.

Fwiw: I didn't get serious about teaching myself to cook until the pandemic hit. There's a legit case to bring back HomeEc with a better name. There's crucial pieces of the skill set have gone missing.
