According to a CBC News analysis of Toronto Police data, home invasions in Toronto have risen notably in recent years, with a significant shift toward targeting detached houses in some of the city's wealthiest neighbourhoods. Prior to 2023, most incidents occurred in apartments, condos, and rooming houses, but since then, houses have accounted for over 70 percent of reported home invasions. This year, there have been 45 incidents including attempts, representing a 22 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Police attribute part of the trend to organized crime groups recruiting youth to steal vehicle keys, following improvements in car security that reduced carjackings. In response, Toronto Police launched Project AEGIS in late February, deploying marked and covert patrols in high-incidence divisions such as 32 and 53, covering areas like Bedford Park-Nortown, Willowdale East, Lawrence Park, Rosedale, and Leaside. This has resulted in a marked decline in incidents in those zones. Residents in affected neighbourhoods are also taking proactive steps, including installing advanced security systems with AI monitoring and rapid-response private security services, as well as forming neighbourhood watch groups to share information and tips with police. Calls for criminal justice reform are growing, with police and residents advocating for stronger measures against youth recruitment by organized crime, including proposed legislation like Bill C-16 and bail reforms with reverse onus for these offences. While home invasions dropped in 2025 after peaking in 2024, the recent uptick underscores ongoing challenges with repeat offenders and the need for sustained prevention efforts across the city.
