That they can reflect the very worst aspects of human nature and through their defeat we can better understand ourselves and do better

That's fictional monsters

I've spent the last ten years watching people irl strive to be actual monsters with no reason to stop

Sucks

Poltergeist with all the modern tech. Imagine being sucked into an Alexa and you hear that little girl's voice? Your Alexa just starts saying, "Mommy, I can't hear you, Mommy!" *shudders*
Or maybe Pazuzu as an influencer. Captain Howdy's make-up game is on point.

I've been through a lot of horror in my life. Sometimes the actions of others have bled into my fiction, of course it has. It's given me the window into the souls of the misogynistic, ugly, and rotten. I can write bad humans/monsters as if I were in their gross shoes for a day.

Making it personal.

Q3: #HorrorWritersChat - In what ways has your own history (past) impacted or inspired your horror writing?

Examples: giving a character your childhood trauma, reimagining an experience with a different ending.

It depends, because a lot of my stories throw the character right into the action, presently. But there're those that require a bit of backstory, such as my western horror Soiled Doves in Hot Iron and Cold Blood. Actually, I do have quite a few, but too many to name. lol.

Even fictional characters have a past.

Q2: #HorrorWritersChat - How much history, how much of a past, do you give your horror characters?

Share an example.

Hello, I'm Vivian and I write horror, various. Historical fiction is always good. For me The Exorcist, The Terror. I am sure I have read more but these came to mind rather quick. Coyote Songs is also a good one.

The first of 2 for this month's indie paperback purchase; an intriguing eco-horror by @anna-orridge.bsky.social - an author I've never tried before, but just the glimpses of her talented I've seen from the weekly HorrorWritersChats has me very excited to dive into this!

So sad to have missed the last #HorrorWritersChats while traveling & due to medical stuff but I wanted to answer this 1 question because it's one of my favorites.

In THE ETERNA FILES (book 1 of 3) my heroine, who has an existing health concern, knows she's about to lose consciousness (1/?)
