"I have an agreement with the houseflies. The flies don't practice law and I don't walk on the ceiling."

I don't think that houseflies have feelings, but if I caught my kid pulling their wings off I'd be disturbed by it

It seems like a relatively small leap from enjoying simulated suffering to enjoying real suffering. A gateway drug, if you will

I think it's best to nip it in the bud

I have seen people talking to dolls, people in TV, empty chairs, mirrors (failing the mirror test), and even houseflies, expecting them to respond.

The sad reality is that the staff in those places tends to have time/interest for doing only the bare minimum and most have few visitors.

Just spent 15 minutes doing battle with a horde of fat houseflies in our kitchen, swatting the fuckers with a towel.
I’ve now got a sore arm and a sink full of corpses.
Worth it though, just to feel like a boss

I'm ready for these mosquitoes and houseflies to fuck off and die

How and Why I Rescued a Housefly

I ordinarily terminate houseflies with homemade fly spray. But on October 5, 2026, I saw one unexpectedly trying to leave my home. This is the story of win-win heroism.

Houseflies would work pretty well. They live everywhere but Antarctica and their reproductive cycles are very fast.

Large houseflies are somehow getting trapped between the screen and glass of my sliding doors (the only window in the room), which feels vaguely threatening and I can't open the window. :(

Chris Rock: I feed and breed houseflies, I grow them in a shoebox and let them loose in people’s houses some of my best friends houses

Me (inexplicably listening to a Chris rock interview in 2026 maybe bc I died and time stops in hell) the talented mr will smith was right to have slapped him!!!!

They’re certainly far beyond houseflies (1T weights vs. 50M synapses), and most people already wouldn’t gratuitously torture anything so obviously alive as bugs.

I read houseflies the first time. And I had to think for a minute. Are the houseflies paying the price of data centers? Probably not

We really shouldn't care anymore about what russians think than what houseflies think. It's utterly unimportant.

Brain signals in mice may track elapsed time, not predict events. Gradual rises in activity appeared even in animals that had never encountered the stimuli before. doi.org/hck2g3
Brain signals thought to predict events may instead track time
Few neuroscientists would dispute that the brain relies on prediction. From houseflies evading swatters to humans catching baseballs, living things are constantly anticipating what comes next.

Same buzz as a swarm of houseflies.

Haven’t seen a single bee in Brittany this summer.
Several dopey wasps, far fewer houseflies than previously.

It’s not looking great for wildlife of any kind.
Nor humans, but we caused the problem.
I’ve walked the fields at dawn for years.
The air used to hum with bees. Now it’s quieter every season.
What most people never see is the scale: over 3.7 million tonnes of pesticide active ingredients poured onto the planet every year — more than double what we used in 1990.

Mister spider, tell me the news,
You're sick of houseflies; got bluebottle blues.
Look in your eyes says you're looking for closure,
But mister spider please don't come no closer~

I would also like to add houseflies to that request.
I don't want much, just the ability to make mosquitoes immolate with my mind. Is that too much to ask for?
