The Canberra Raiders are in a strong position to retain NRL star Hudson Young, according to coach Ricky Stuart. The club offered Young a $3.3 million, three-year contract, which would keep him until 2030. Expansion club PNG Chiefs initially showed interest but were constrained by NRL rules requiring them to offer market value. Despite this, the tax-free $900,000 annual deal from PNG effectively surpasses the Raiders' offer. Stuart revealed that Young was required to guarantee a potential move to Port Moresby before visiting, which he declined. Young expressed interest in exploring opportunities but stated his preference for staying with the Raiders or Chiefs. The Raiders aim to finalise the contract quickly to ease Young's mind, while other players like Savelio Tamale face minor injuries requiring surgery. Key fixtures include the Raiders' match against North Queensland Cowboys and NRLW action at Canberra Stadium.

Hudson Young is set to return to the Canberra Raiders for their upcoming NRL clash against the Penrith Panthers on Sunday, after serving a two-game suspension. His absence coincided with a number of injuries within the squad, particularly in the second-row position. Young, recognised for his aggressive and unpredictable playing style, has been one of the Raiders' standout performers this season, scoring three tries and setting up three more across seven games. Captain Joe Tapine highlighted Young's leadership on the left edge, praising his ability to set standards and direct play, which complements Tapine’s efforts in the middle. The match is expected to attract over 20,000 fans, making it the biggest crowd of the season at Canberra Stadium. Alongside Young, Ethan Strange may return from an ankle injury, providing the Raiders with additional depth in a rematch of the 'Miracle of Mudgee'. The club is also focusing on developing its young talent, including players like Ethan Sanders, Xavier Savage, Kaeo Weekes, and Savelio Tamale, with an eye towards long-term success. The Raiders are keen to build continuity and strength through their emerging players while aiming for a strong performance against the ladder-leading Panthers.
