What's a Huntigowk?
November 17, 2024 at 12:03 PM
My mother used to say this wee rhyme if you tried an April fool after midday. Huntigowk is passed
You're a fool at last
Up the tree n doon the tree
You're a fool as well as me

Ayont the linn; ayont the linn,
Whaur gowdan wags the gorse,
A gowk gaed cryin’: “Come ye in:
I’ve fairins in my purse…”

I had totally forgotten about huntigowk my uncle use to say that all the time
November 18, 2024 at 5:38 AM
I remember sticking our hands under cars to grab pennies and staying up at hogmanay in our PJ's and putting gifts of coal on the fire & Paw's whisky breath. Singing for monkey nuts and dunking for apples.
Don't know what Huntigowk is?

My gran called it huntigowk. She told me with obvious relish that when she was wee at huntigowk, weans attempted to attach paper tails to each other and set fire to them. Sounds terrifying! My granny was born in 1914.

Feasgar math folks, I hope everyone is having a good Tuesday. It's Huntigowk Day or it was until noon. A bit colder today but still nice walking weather. I found a pair of nesting geese. It'll take about 28 days for the eggs to hatch. Enjoy your day, stay safe, stay well, stay warm.

Thank the gods it will soon be 12 noon. Me at Westminster? Hell and Freezing over spring to mind. #HuntiGowk

*April the 1st disclaimer*

If I fall for any huntigowk japes, it's only because the world has gone so mad, it's like we're living in the Upside Down.

In my wildest dreams, I could not have imagined Canada or Greenland's sovereignty being threatened by America.

Nor even RFK or Hegseth as concepts.

April fools day was traditionally called Huntigowk Day? The name comes from the saying 'Hunt the Gowk' which translates from Scots as 'hunt for the cuckoo' or 'foolish person'.

Got to admit I don't recognise 'Huntigowk'
November 18, 2024 at 9:08 AM
April Fool!
We called it Huntigowk in 1950's Edinburgh.

And if you played a trick on your pal, you shouted "huntigowk' at them to let them know that they'd been 'had'. But the word was dying out even then, to be replaced by 'April Fool'.
