The Painted Kinedeer, a trichromat cow descendant that has learned to exploit the hyne's fruit orchards. For the Hyne's Inheritance.

#thehynesinheritance #specevo #speculativeevolution #worldbuilding
Kinedeer are the most diverse family of cattle found on Demeter fifteen million years hence. Superficially, they resemble antelopes with long cursorial legs and backwards facing horns. With both browsers and grazers in their midst, kinedeer find a home in both closed forests to open grasslands and deserts. The Painted Kinedeer (bull depicted here) is the most common species encountered by the hyne of the Chrysa Ring. It's a large species standing almost two meters at the withers and weighing 2,000 lbs. Long neural spines and the accompanying hump of muscle give this mid-height browser a proud stance. At rest, it's neck is naturally held almost completely upright. Meanwhile the skin along its lower neck and chest is a loose dewlap, allowing it to expel excess heat and deflect the claws and bites of predators like captors. Most unique about this species and how it earns its name are the bright blue and red skin on its nose, bridge of the snout, lips, and inner ears. They resemble similar markings on earthly mandrill monkeys or fowl like turkeys. It all betrays a more unique adaptation: the painted kinedeer is a trichromat, able to see three colors red, green, and blue. Trichromacy first evolved in this species as they increasingly began to pursue colorful fruits amongst the leaves. In cows, the markings are limited to the nose and inner ears and is more muted, their horns are smaller and straighter. Bulls lead herds of 10-20 cows and their calves. Painted kinedeer are a particular nuisance species for the hyne. These horse sophonts have redomesticated several fruit trees and hold control over large orchards. While they don't need to hunt for food, hyne will hunt painted kinedeer to prevent them from raiding their orchards. But this kinedeer has evolved alongside the hyne and is crafty. They are diurnal and have sparse hair, allowing them to strike in the bold heat of the day.

Unhappy Deathday to Grant Allen, whose ‘The Thames Valley Catastrophe’ (1897) I think about surprisingly often. Topical Northern Government angle to it, too.
In Grant Allen’s ‘The Thames Valley Catastrophe’ (1897), there is a ‘fissure-eruption’ through which ‘vast roaring floods, molten torrents of basalt’ pours, destroying all in its path. Ruddick has described this story as ‘the paradigmatic work of British catastrophe fiction of the kind in which consolation takes precedence over subversion’. The consolation is that the narrator’s family are saved and the English behave in an exemplary manner, but London is destroyed, and as in Hyne, ‘The Government sits at Manchester’ (though Hyne adds: ‘and the world mocks at it’.)

The hookfang boar, a piscivorous pig from the Hyne's Inheritance project!

#pig #boar #creaturedesign #specevo #speculativeevolution #specbio
The Eastern Riverlands refers to a large region of central Arion east to the Chrysa Ring and north of the Still Sea. Thousands of years ago, this expanse of low-lying grassland and fluvial plains became the first place to be colonized by the hyne. These horse people took residence in the dryer uplands where their preferred domesticated crops could grow. The sprawling rivers and wetlands between their hilltop villages are known as dangerous borderlands home to terribly large alligators, fish, and boar. The hooktusk boar is a species of large piscivorous swine. Specialized to wade into shallow water and catch fish akin to a giant piggy heron, hooktusks actually pose little danger to the hyne. While taller and certainly capable of dispatching large prey, these boars have long narrow jaws with a weak bite strength meant to clasp down on fish. The eponymous hooked tusks prevent fish from slipping out forward while sharpened molars slice into scaly flesh. They could give a hyne a nasty bloody bite but are highly uninclined to do so. The dark pelt aids them in blending in at night, when they prefer to be active. Their large ears alert them to the faint splashing of fish below the water. All four of their toes tough the ground and are connected by webbing. They are poor swimmers so instead use this to prevent them from sinking into soft mud and silt. Long thin legs allow them to keep much of their body out of the water, appearing as thin trunks or branches to their prey. This species lives in sprawling gregarious groups that remain amicable throughout the year. Mature boars will challenge one another for mating rights each autumn but this takes the form of bellowing oinks and flashing tusks. Rarely do they inflict it on one another, reserving it for their prey or the odd onlooker.
