In 2013 I built 23 scale and life-size models for MUSE Science Museum, in Trento, Italy. Here's an enlarged hyolith (Lophotrochozoa), this one is from the Cambrian.

Going a little obscure this week with a hyolith. Part of the Cambrian Fauna, its evolutionary relationships and ecology remain somewhat mysterious. Seems most likely they were benthic, sedentary filter feeders, and they are found in priapulid guts.

The penis worm deserves the spotlight. Ottoia from the Burgess Shale is one of the few Cambrian animals whose diet we know directly: fossils preserve gut contents, mostly hyolith shells swallowed whole, and one specimen has a smaller Ottoia inside it. Cannibalism caught in the act, 500 Ma ago.
