The story of my life, especially with my hyperacusis
February 2, 2025 at 3:43 PM
I love New York. Cities and I do not mesh. I have Daredevil hearing *and* misophonia *and* hyperacusis. But I fucking love New Yorkers. Horrible, miserable, angry, assholes the lot of them. And also some of the best people out there.
Last image from tonight (short film in the morning): this brother out here with his Singer sewing machine, gifting people a custom embroidery on their jerseys and hats with the name and the date, was more artistic than anything at Burning Man and ad gorgeous as a Caravaggio.

Magic!

Goodnight.

One of the most commonly discussed (or observed) hypersenses is hyperacusis (hearing).

If you hear a constant buzz or hum coming from electronics that others don’t … you might have hyperacusis.

Btw … the Having hypersensitive hearing to the point that it is distressing in some manner is generally called “hyperacusis”

Hey, teachers, doctors, (sometimes parents): Stop. Taking. Ear Protection. From. Autistic Kids.

You're putting them in pain. It's pain. It's called hyperacusis.

65% of autistic people have a pain disability involving loud noises. Ear protection prevents the pain.

Hyperacusis is an increased sensitivity to sound and a low tolerance for environmental noise.

It is a known symptom of frontotemporal dementia.

There's a condition called hyperacusis that makes you particularly sensitive to loud noises.
But hey, good job you both found out before you got to "in sickness and in health", doesn't sound like you're emotionally ready for that yet.

Thread on
For autistic people, does wearing ear protection make auditory hyperacusis (pain with loud noises) worse? -
I believe I wrote an article about this for STAR Institute,

But to be clear - there is no actual research showing this. I've read up on a lot of auditory autism research and it is essentially all theory that this happens - it is assumed, they assume we have NT brains. We do not.

Autistic Lexicon

Hyperacusis & Misophonia

Hyperacusis is a distressing sensitivity to sound.

Misophonia is having an atypically emotionally charged (irritated, enraged, panicked, etc ..) reaction to specific trigger sounds.

Both are relatively common for Autistic people.

Trump has Hyperacusis and FTD - Caused by degradation in the frontal and temporal lobes. The brain loses its "inhibitory control"—the filter that allows a person to mute or ignore background noise. Leads to an altered emotional or behavioral aversion to sounds.

Stephin Merritt

Merritt developed pain hyperacusis -- a sensitivity to high frequency sounds (e.g., cymbals). The condition has affected live performance & recordings, necessitating more sparse instrumentation.

I don’t think most people actually want a cure for autism. They usually mean that they want to end specific things they dislike: meltdowns, social issues, hyperacusis, etc. But that’s not what “autism” is. 1/3

Tinnitus and hyperacusis is making me depressed. I dunno… time is a healer I guess but not being able to make music is killing me inside.

In the movie Tuner, a man with extreme hyperacusis talks to his gf:

Her: “You’re not working towards anything”

Him: “Every day, it takes everything in me just to exist, to work, to live. Don’t tell me I’m not working towards anything.”

Felt that in my chronically ill, hyperacusis-suffering bones.
