Targetoid Maculopathy in CEP290-Related Joubert Syndrome
An 8-month-old female infant, referred from pediatric neurology for pendular nystagmus and motor delay, exhibited ptosis, exotropia, and high hyperopia (cycloplegic retinoscopy: +8.50 + 1.50 × 90° right eye; +10.50 + 1.50 × 90° left eye). Ophthalmoscopy revealed myelinated retinal nerve fibers surrounding the right optic disc, alongside subtle epiretinal membrane and retinal pigment epithelium alterations in both eyes. Fundus autofluorescence depicted bilateral targetoid macular rings (A, B). Brain magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the classic “molar tooth sign” (C) and a batwing-shaped fourth ventricle (D).

A baby's eyes are not miniature adult eyes.

They are still growing, changing focus, and developing coordination. Mild farsightedness is often part of that process.

Our latest article explains why.

Born Farsighted? How a Baby’s Eyes Grow Into Focus
Babies often begin life mildly farsighted, but their eyes change quickly. Find out how vision develops and when farsightedness may become a concern.

myopia/hyperopia feels like one of those disabilities that's kinda represented and underrepresented at the same time in popular media. like every time i saw it in a show i watched they just had to make that stupid fucking joke about the character losing their glasses

Address diurnal refractive shift in post-RK eyes
Radial keratotomy was a popular refractive procedure in the late 20th century, offering millions of patients a large degree of spectacle freedom. Decades later, these patients develop cataracts and progressive hyperopia as the cornea continues to flatten. In addition, these deep corneal stromal incisions can cause diurnal fluctuations as the corneal architecture and power can waver daily. When these patients present to our clinic for cataract surgery, we can address the lens opacity, the refractive error and the diurnal fluctuations at the same time. Patients report a predictable corneal

Cataract surgery in highly hyperopic eyes
Performing cataract surgery in eyes with high degrees of hyperopia can give great refractive results, but there are challenges to overcome. Eyes with short axial lengths typically have a shallow anterior chamber, a disproportionately large crystalline lens and elevated posterior vitreous pressure, all of which create a crowded space in which every surgical maneuver must be deliberate. Operating successfully in these short eyes requires a refined approach spanning preoperative evaluation, specialized biometry, modified fluidics and careful patient counseling regarding postoperative optics. I can see use for this in populations for things like dyslexia or hyperopia, but way too many people are offshoring intellectual function in general. I don’t know if there’s a fix for that, unfortunately.

Is LASIK the Solution for Astigmatism? What To Know
Astigmatism is a common eye condition where the cornea (outermost eye layer) is irregular. The cornea is usually round like a sphere, but people with astigmatism have oval-shaped corneas. This shape changes how light rays enter the eye, leading to blurred vision. Many people with astigmatism have nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia).  LASIK, a laser eye surgery that corrects common vision problems by reshaping the cornea, may help treat people with mild to moderate astigmatism. However, it may not be right for everyone. LASIK is a type of surgery that uses a laser to reshape the cornea to improve how light enters the retina.
