One of the founders of the Samourai Wallet mixing software has received the maximum sentence — five years. Like Tornado Cash, the case centered on arguments over whether the developers were creating privacy preserving technology or intentionally facilitating criminal activity.
![Samourai Wallet
Privacy advocates in the crypto world have been closely watching the Samourai Wallet case [I56, 57, 83, 84, 90], with many comparing it to the highly controversial prosecution of Tornado Cash founder Roman Storm [Tornado]. The Samourai Wallet founders, who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business in exchange for prosecutors dropping the more severe money laundering conspiracy charge, have maintained that they were merely developing privacy-preserving software, and that they were not responsible for criminal use of the software. Prosecutors have argued that the developers actively intended the software to be used for criminal purposes, pointing to marketing aimed at “Dark/Grey Market participants” and those engaged in “Illicit activity”.
Prosecutors have sought a five-year sentence for the two founders — the statutory maximum for the charge — and Keonne Rodriguez received that full sentence, plus a $250,000 fine. Rodriguez has already paid $6.3 million in forfeiture. Judge Cote cited a letter to the court in which Rodriguez continued to say that he was merely motivated by a desire to protect financial privacy and not “a desire to facilitate criminal activity” as evidence that Rodriguez “has not come to terms with what he did. ... The letter indicated to me that you were very much still operating in a world with moral blinders on.”6 William Lonergan Hill, Rodriguez’s cofounder, will be sentenced later this month.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:exrxvyu6bpoym6mbnctke5tn/bafkreif3nenuufnk5j7x2usfz6vx6ocqyehhz44tmnzvwehmcmldmf5esm)

Samourai Wallet case is on hold while govt decides whether to dismiss the criminal case based on Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s instructions to deprioritize enforcement of crypto crime. They’re charged with operating an unlicensed money transmitting business & money laundering conspiracy.
![Prosecutors who filed charges a year ago against the operators of Samourai Wallet [I56, 57, 67] have joined the defense in requesting a pause in the case “while the Government determines its position” on a request to dismiss the case based on Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s “Memorandum on Ending Regulation by Prosecution” [I81].24 The memo directed the Justice Department “not [to] charge regulatory violations in cases involving digital assets … unless there is evidence that the defendant knew of the licensing or registration requirement at issue and violated such a requirement willfully”.25 The Samourai Wallet defendants are charged with conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business — one of the violations Blanche instructed prosecutors not to charge — but also with money laundering conspiracy.26](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:exrxvyu6bpoym6mbnctke5tn/bafkreidyqutv6yn6a24igousk5zihozlutz4k4ewb6a3nsc47ei7qf2wla)

The bitcoin community is fighting over an upcoming software change that one developer has warned will be the end of bitcoin. He has reportedly discussed creating a trusted group of censors with the authority to alter data recorded on chain.
![Bitcoiners have been embroiled in a battle surrounding an impending update to Bitcoin Core, the reference implementation for bitcoin nodes, which will increase the amount of data that can be included in bitcoin transactions beyond simple payment information. Supporters argue this provides a better method for storing arbitrary data on the bitcoin chain than existing approaches like the controversial Ordinals [I46] or Runes [I56] projects, while reducing the resource burden on node operators. Opponents contend that bitcoin developers should discourage such activity, and have raised concerns about network spam and potential legal liability for node operators, since each bitcoin node must download all transaction data. Some worry that bad actors could upload illicit data, like copyrighted content or child sexual abuse material, to the chain, creating legal problems for anyone running a node. Supporters have pushed back on these concerns, noting that node operators can “prune” (discard) the added data after validation, and that illicit content already exists on the bitcoin chain but hasn’t resulted in legal issues.39](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:exrxvyu6bpoym6mbnctke5tn/bafkreidin34z4wacssxcltg2n3ugd4u42udsv6xcon23ffv5p4qouv4iya)
![Opponents have framed the update in dire terms. Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr — a longtime critic of bitcoin “spam” [I20, 46] and maintainer of the alternative Knots node software — has claimed that bitcoin “will cease to exist when Core30 changes it into a CSAM file sharing platform” and that “Bitcoin doesn’t survive if v30 gets widespread adoption.”4041 Dashjr has reportedly discussed creating a trusted group of censors with the authority to alter illicit data recorded on chain —a controversial proposal in an ecosystem that prides itself on being trustless, uncensorable, and immutable. “Right now the only options would be Bitcoin dies or we have to trust someone,” Dashjr wrote in leaked messages published by The Rage.42](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:exrxvyu6bpoym6mbnctke5tn/bafkreierhkot4yegdz3u73kdyaj34le5gqv6w6dkv3x6kybeswetkftb3e)

A Samourai Wallet co-founder failed to convince a judge to let him off house arrest after his "bug out" list surfaced — with items including "learn Spanish" and reminders to pack burner SIM cards. His lawyers argued it was just his plan for general emergencies.
![Samourai Wallet co-founders Keonne Rodriguez and William Hill appeared for their first hearing in the criminal case pertaining to their operation of the crypto mixing service [I56, 57]. Rodriguez has been confined to house arrest, which he requested be lifted during the hearing. However, after prosecutors produced a handwritten note in which Rodriguez detailed his “bug out prep” plans — which included “learn Spanish” and reminders to set aside “10,000 USD (min)” and “as much bitcoin as possible”, the judge opted to keep the restriction in place.10 His defense team claimed those were just plans for a general emergency.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:exrxvyu6bpoym6mbnctke5tn/bafkreigdmg4ii5msfufhfacpjumbm2f5c3soicyhogrfqk2u5gru2y3yva)

In total there'll be somewhere between 6-7 parts of Puppy Love, enough to comfortably fit everything without dragging it out too much. We know the rest of the parts are gonna be shorter than Part 1 (really that one was like 2 parts for the price of 1), think True Color or I56 "Understanding". 7/
