#IC125
InterCity named services always peaked my interest, and probably this one more than most, the Highland Chieftain. The once a day service between London Kings Cross and Inverness. 43107 Heads the return morning service from the Highlands.

Morning. Bath Spa today, where 253019 may be found in November 1976. This is how I like to remember HSTs; I wrote about the 'Silver Jubilee' (1977) exploits of '019 many years ago in TRACTION magazine. 📷©️ Phil Wakely. Click the link to see his Flickr selection.

Morning. Here is 253012 at Swindon with a 'Paddington' soon after the introduction of HST services in October 1976. Note the ex-Midland van on the left and the lads on the right. You or me. Great 📷©️Phil Wakely. Click the link to see his Flickr pages.

Morning all. Here's an HST passing the site of Corsham station, which closed in 1965. It is October 1976, so the new 125-mph timetable had only just begun. ABBA or Pussycat were at no.1. Ah well. 📷 c.Phil Wakely. Click the image to see his Flickr selection.

I keep thinking of the times I've been in the cabins of NS VIRMs or ICNGs and they're basically solid chunks of steel. The IC125 being made out of fibreglass is just nuts.

I just remember them from early childhood. The IC125 were always my favourite
January 2, 2026 at 11:25 AM

The 125 was fun. And when we where there 2019, we were able to go inside the bullet train. The Chinese loco is cool as well
February 16, 2025 at 9:48 PM
There is one carriage (driving trailer) from the original ‘Bullet’ train, and yes there is a power car from an IC125. Some of these IC125 trains actually still run in service, albeit on shortened trains.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lord Prescott a few times. He was friendly, engaging, and was passionate about Hull. He had the idea to celebrate the city on the IC125 HST which we used on our Hull services. Which is how we ended up with “It’s never dull in Hull” on the side of one of our HSTs.

En oh ja, in Australië rijdt een trein waarvan het ontwerp gebaseerd is op de Britse IC125 (alleen is deze wat hoger en breder - Britse treinen zijn nogal laag en smal). Ook wel een vrij badass design.

I agree. It looks cheap and tacky. Except IC125, which was excellent , the old blue/green/yellow was a bit boring but the previous deep green, or the 2 tone green would have looked much better and given an air of "quality".

I bet that may have been the case since the 70s (God bless the IC125)

What surprises me about those is that the coaches were pretty much what became the standard mk3 stock for the new IC125.
December 8, 2025 at 1:00 PM
Some of the old GWR ic125 stock ended up in Scotland, without coach A bit after a bit at least ScotRail recognised the issue and have space just about for four bikes with folding seats.
#GWR cycle storage working out brilliantly...😕

Oh, and as @petraboynton.bsky.social says in a quote-tweet: train doors that you had to open with a handle. Especially the ones where you had to slide down the window and turn the handle on the outside. IC 125s were the last ones I used. Scotrail still have an IC125, but the doors are now electric.

Don't get me wrong. The IC125 is a spectacular bit of kit for its era, and for long afterwards, but it's 5 decades old tech now, and long superseded for high speed rail applications.
February 25, 2025 at 3:01 PM
This one, though? The coaches are retired and the power cars aren’t part of any IC125 services any more.
June 10, 2025 at 8:01 PM
I am not listening to it (it appears from tests that the little barely there sniffle and sore throat are, in fact, Covid) but I’d rather be on an IC125 than in a fucking Boeing right now.
