Stunning image of the NGC 6872 galaxy, a massive spiral galaxy four times the size of the Milky Way, interacting gravitationally with the smaller galaxy IC 4970. Captured by the Gemini South telescope, this cosmic collision showcases intricate details of star formation and gas distribution, highlighting the beauty and scientific significance of galactic interactions. The image is a result of a winning essay submitted by the Sydney Girls High School Astronomy Club.
