I'm pretty sure registrars will use your search query to automatically gobble up the domain you're looking for so they can sell it back to you at a higher price.
I only use ICANN's whois tool for this reason.

This is a flaw on ICANN's part IMO, a requirement for delegating gTLDs should be a strict deadline for opening them to the public, except perhaps the brand name ones

I've had an epiphany watching an #IGF2025 parliamentarians session: the parliamentarians track is basically the GAC (Governmental Advisory Committee) of IGF. Like ICANN's GAC, they sit at tables, other stakeholder groups come in to talk to them & they produce a communique (called an "output" at IGF)

I will also tentatively support people squatting on ICANN's namespace for specific TLDs (e.g. .onion, .eth), but squatting the whole namespace (i.e. what handshake does) is shitty.

It wouldn't be that extreme. ICANN's not going anywhere. They're not at risk here. VPNs... it would depend. It would change the nature of the internet, but not quite as drastic as you lay out. But it would be very bad for having spaces for LGBTQ+ folks.

5/ ICANN's recent statement aims to reassure us that removing DEI to respond to "evolving external dynamics" [of US govt repudiation of DEI], doesn't change its ongoing commitment to "ICANN’s core values". It's just swapped out "DEI" for "representation".

Country code TLDs are usually administered by government agencies or local NGOs and unlike (newer) generic TLDs, they don't fall under the purview of ICANN, so they don't need to comply with ICANN's abuse prevention rules.
.io is also a ccTLD, so it also doesn't fall under those rules.

This isn't as important as getting the physical/digital infrastructure online for general local internet sovereignty, but I think it should probably happen eventually.
