Ok, the first full day of @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25 starting now! Ricky Archer, Director of National Parks, Parks Australia. 1st Indigenous person to hold the role. Awesome!
June 15, 2025 at 10:46 PM
This conference will also launch the new Kakadu National Park research strategy. Putting Traditional Owner perspective first in co-management. How to "hand back" land that's always been Aboriginal land, regardless of conservation scheme. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 15, 2025 at 11:01 PM
Now in my 1st session - one hour of 4 min speed talks re conservation law & policy. Opened by Steph Brodie of CSIRO fisheries. Talks about fisheries industry response to 2024 climate extremes; trends, response, on-the-water, etc. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
A whirlwind of talks and info in this session! Big takeaways: conservation law/policy needs to be applied in social/econ context, can't inadvertently aid "greenwashing", planning for ongoing funding pools outside of govt cycles vital to Indigenous projects, etc. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 16, 2025 at 1:12 AM
And now Debra (missed her last name) OAM. Australian Koala Foundation. Talking about their huge multi-year mapping project of all koala habitat in Oz. 23yrs, $20m! All private/citizen funded. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 15, 2025 at 11:43 PM
Very interesting session overall - diverse topics and species, a decent balance of case studies/practical examples of controls vs modelling. Not being in this field, I could still learn much. Great! @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25

Debra AKF: We're not winning the battle to save the environment, industry is. Koala Protection Act needed. 10yrs old - not touched yet. Ecocide a reality - laws need to come in ASAP. Gotta keep speaking truth to power. Govt false care behind "deals" falls short. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25

A/Prof. Li. Good point: City dweller seeing a bird hit a window in front of them is more impactful than raw #s. Low-cost solutions, take neutral approach to local community dynamics. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 15, 2025 at 11:32 PM
A/Prof. Li. National Park system in China is new. Now, Giant Panda National Park covers 73 older reserves, most panda habitat, 120,000 residents, etc. Needs sociocultural approach to management. Increase trust, fixed rules, community led. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 15, 2025 at 11:24 PM

June 15, 2025 at 7:41 AM
Ok, next session up. Another speed talk session, this time Alien & Invasive Species. Chair: Alejandro Garcia (Invasives expert). Several interesting talks to come on plant & animal Invasives; impact, genetics, potential threats, disease risk, value models, etc. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 16, 2025 at 1:47 AM
Since the talks are so quick, I can't efficiently skeet. Trust me that there's a wide range of topics - some Australian focused, some international. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 16, 2025 at 12:38 AM
A/Prof. Li. Also discusses forest protection in tea plantations in Yunnan. More canopy means better tea taste and higher price. Sustainable protected used landscape. What about urban citizen science? China anti-bird-window collision project. US/Canada collabs. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 15, 2025 at 11:29 PM
Now, councillor Tracy Davis. Civic Cabinet Chair of the Environment, Parks and Sustainability Committee. Shares words on behalf of the Lord Mayor too. #ICCB25 @iccb2025.bsky.social

June 15, 2025 at 11:14 PM
Discussion mostly about Australia's jointly managed Parks, run w/Traditional Owners. Kakadu, Uluru Kata Tjuta, Jervis Bay. How to better manage marine parks to hit 30x30 target? 30% protected by 2030. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
June 15, 2025 at 10:50 PM
A/Prof. Li. Citing recent work (Grima et al. 2020). Forest restoration 16x more effective than infrastructure repair. Carbon neutrality vs. biodiversity conservation. Tree planting not enough. Panda, forest, livestock interplay example. @iccb2025.bsky.social #ICCB25
