*Laugh/cries in administers an ICHRA coverage*

CHOICE Plans: This is a rebranding of ICHRA plans (individual coverage health reimbursement arrangement), which I admit is a much better-sounding name for them.

ICHRA/CHOICE plans are one of the few genuinely decent healthcare ideas which came out of the Trump 1.0 admin.

The provisions in the *main* House GOP bill include:

--Association Health Plans
--CSR reimbursement payments
--PBM reform
--CHOICE plans (aka ICHRA)
--Deregulating Stop-Loss Group plans

It sounds like what you have is an ICHRA, which employers can choose to offer to retirees. People who take an ICHRA benefit are not eligible for Marketplace subsidies: www.healthinsurance.org/glossary/ind...

The ICHRA/CHOICE provisions may have some poison pill language buried in it, but on the surface I'd actually be fine with this.

So far that's 2 "HELL NO!" and 2 "Probably OK?" provisions.
December 13, 2025 at 4:57 PM
Assuming it's the same language they tried adding to the OBBBA bill last summer, the House GOP bill would codify ICHRA/CHOICE into law, but would also encourage small businesses to embrace them by...(drumroll)...

...offering TAX CREDITS to them.

That's right.
December 13, 2025 at 4:52 PM
WITHOUT the "Fitzpatrick Bill" attached, the remaining House GOP bill would include 5 provisions:

1. Codifying Association plans
2. Codifying ICHRA/CHOICE plans
3. Stripping Stop-Loss plans of state regulation
4. Nominal oversight of PBMs
5. Reinstating CSR reimbursement payments

This is painful to listen to because I *THINK* he's talking about the "CHOICE" option (previously called ICHRA plans), which is actually one of the very few *good* ideas that came out of the Trump 1.0 administration...but he's completely mangling the description of why this is a good option.
Dr Oz on health insurance: "I'm gonna give you the money instead of buying you insurance ... look, why have a buffet offered to everybody if maybe a few people want À la carte service? 'I'm young, I don't have kids, I'm not married ... '"
September 8, 2026 at 1:26 PM
ICHRA/CHOICE plans were created via executive order during Trump 1.0, but never actually codified. The Biden Admin was basically neutral about them--he never rescinded the exec order, but he also never tried to make them permanent either.

Many small businesses use ICHRA or QSHERA to reimburse employees for health insurance purchased through the ACA. It's one of the easiest ways for a small business to cover health insurance and is now built into employee benefit programs nationwide.
September 26, 2026 at 7:46 PM
Companies are already implementing Trumps ICHRA changes. My employer is going to cut our health benefits starting in 2027 and provide a super generous 300.00 a month stipend for us to secure our own health benefits. Fuck this bullshit.

Here's more details about how it works via @louisenorris.bsky.social (who everyone interested in healthcare policy should follow).

Again, it's not a bad idea, but it DOES have some disruptive impacts on *both* risk pools which can be positive *or* negative.

i am chronically ill (lupus) and work for a 501c3. due to rising costs my employer opted for an ichra in 2026, meaning no more group coverage. we purchase plans thru the aca and they reimburse us ~80%. and they did this knowing the aca subsidies are up for a vote.

When you move young, healthy people from one risk pool to another, it makes the latter less expensive but the former more expensive.

Under ICHRA/CHOICE, employers have to make an all-or-nothing decision (that is, they can't offer *either* group coverage *or* ACA coverage) to a class of employees.
September 8, 2026 at 1:44 PM
--Under ICHRA/CHOICE, instead of group coverage, the employer has the employees enroll in an ACA plan instead

--The employee *doesn't* get ACA subsidies & thus has to pay full price, HOWEVER the employer *reimburses* them for a portion (presumably the same ~2/3) of the premiums instead
September 8, 2026 at 1:33 PM
I am not sure this is not some weird scheme to push ichra plans for all.

Are we honoring the workers today?

If my tiny family farm can pay our workers above average wages, PTO, SEP-IRA, ICHRA, bonuses, and other benefits, surely large corporations can do so? Please support the businesses that treat their workers well.

No, it's a small private practice that doesn't have enough employees to require anything more than an ICHRA benefit for finding our own shitty plans through healthcare.gov

Connecticut Opens $5 Million Small-Business Health Credit
Connecticut is offering up to $5 million in tax credits to small employers that add ICHRA health coverage, with credits of up to $1,000 per participating worker annually for two years.

it would not be the end of the world if the tax credits were replaced by a govt-funded ICHRA,which is a somewhat obscure form of health account that's like an HSA except you can spend it on insurance premiums in addition to other medical expenses en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_...
