1/ OTD in 2001, former Yugoslav and Serbian President Slobodan Milošević was extradited to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, Netherlands. He was transferred by the Serbian government to face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. ⬇️

“Those who devise and implement genocide seek to deprive humanity of the manifold richness its nationalities, races, ethnicities and religions provide. This is a crime against all humankind, its harm being felt not only by the group targeted for destruction, but by all of humanity.”

The most depressingly hilarious thing about externing in the ICTY and doing a ton of doc review was the steady realization of just how utterly dumb the Serb leadership who managed to basically flout Europe for most of a decade was.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia indicted and tried Slobodan Milosevic on charges of complicity in genocide and forcible transfer in the ethnic cleansing of Bosnian Serbs. The *exact crime* Trump is proposing to commit in Gaza.

Joined my friends in discussing one of my favourite books. #Accountability #Justice #ICTY #WarCrimes
Out tomorrow on #Patreon
We reviewed 'They Would Never Hurt a Fly' by Slavenka Drakulić with friend of the pod @vukusiciva.bsky.social

We asked Iva what she thought when she first read the book when it came out in 2003, and what atmosphere there was in terms of accountability for war crimes

Serbia’s “pro-EU” coalition, with European Movement in Serbia, on Kosovo and ICTY judgments:
- No genocide in BiH.
- VRS took up arms for a reason; soldiers died for Serb freedom.
- The West installed Vučić to hand over Kosovo, not send forces to defend Serbs from “quasi-state Kosovo.”

As it has always been. One of the more comedically depressing things about externing for an ICTY trial team was learning how *dumb* the Serb leadership was.

As usual, Richard Grenell is full of shit. No US taxpayers' money is being "wasted" in the ICTY, because the US isn't funding it, and charging people with war crimes isn't a brutal, archaic conspiracy of the EU elites. When someone lands in the Hague, he/she is a defendant, not a head of state.

As a former ICTY staff member and a historian, I feel you can accept (and deplore) the fact that other genocides have occurred while accepting that the Holocaust was unparalleled in its... thoroughness is the best word I can come up with. The Einsatzgruppen, the Aktion Reinhard camps, [...]

On 11 July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces captured Srebrenica, a UN-declared safe area guarded by Dutch peacekeepers. In the following days, they executed more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys and forcibly expelled women and children. The ICTY and ICJ ruled it genocide.

Today’s testimony is giving massive ICTY nostalgia lol

I can't talk *too* deeply about it because I'm pretty sure the case I externed on for an ICTY defense team might still be ongoing but I definitely ran into contemporaneous documents that would corroborate at least some sniper tourism.

ICTY indicts Milosevic = 'anti-Serb'
ICC indicts al-Bashir = 'anti-African'
ICC indicts Netanyahu = 'anti-Semitic'

Apparently international law is racist against everyone 🙄

The realization of just how goddamn dumb the Serbian leaders were was both hilarious and intensely depressing when working at the (ICTY but under the title of MICT).
