Sampling Gulf Stream plankton, one teaspoon at a time
A large part of Emily Peacock’s work focuses on installing autonomous samplers of microscopic ocean life on ships and training image-recognition programs to classify the images it collects. As a research technician studying plankton in Heidi Sosik’s lab, Peacock recently played a role in installing an Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB) on the Oleander, a container ship that travels between New Jersey and Bermuda weekly. The Oleander is owned and operated by the Bermuda Container Line and has carried scientific instruments collecting biological, chemical, and physical marine data, since the 1970s. The installation of the IFCB was made possible by funding from the shipping company CMA CGM. Oceanus sat down with Peacock to hear more about this partnership. What is the Imaging FlowCytobot? It’s a plankton sampler that we call IFCB for short. Every twenty minutes it draws up about a teaspoon of water and takes images of the phytoplankton and some microzooplankton. The first one was designed at WHOI, but now they are made by McLane Research Laboratories, Inc. The IFCB can be used short-term on research cruises, in a permanent location like the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory, or long-term on a ship like the Oleander. Once it’s installed, an IFCB...
