#IGAvania
It's like this game wanted to be Igavania AND classic Castlevania games, so it fails at both. It's a solid 7/10 cause the action is fun, but no one is going to be talking about this game like they do Igavania games, and if this is what Konami wants Castlevania to be moving forward that's fine.

forgive my ignorance but what is Igavania?

Belmont men in Igavania are allowed to have murderous rage to their former friend and compatriot, but Rose is too "angry" and has to master that despite her every action being completely justified.
It's totally unearned and the obvious result of unconscious misogyny. Belmont men are allowed to be assured and decisive in their actions, Rose is lectured about anger that we never actually see, she never even does anything wrong.

thats how you know igavania fans don't actually play the series because they only recognize castlevania as one singular clearly defined identity instead of the mess of constantly changing artistic and mechanic identities it has been since the very start.

The game doesn't really have a story to tell, it's mostly references to Igavania games, and lectures to Rose about controlling her darkness (anger) so that it doesn't consume her. It ends with a lot of these reference characters congratulating her on defeating that inner darkness.

Traversing the castle in Igavania games was not about mastering individual enemy mechanics and precise jumps that send you back to a start of a room if you touch the spikes. That kind of gameplay was found in classic Castlevania which I love, but classic Castlevania doesn't include backtracking.

I think you should talk to @mewtype.online who has a lot of opinions about igavania

I think it will probably be more popular than the Igavania games I loved, which were niche and only ever sold a few hundred thousand copies outside of Symphony of the Night, and it was overall pretty fun I guess. Thank you to @malachiteos.bsky.social for gifting it <3

Certainly A Serviceable Video Game and EE did what they could but now I'm just getting the Igavania itch instead which is the opposite effect Konami probably wants from me

i started castlevania: belmont's curse last night. i think once you get past the initial "IT'S NOT IGAVANIA 😩" cope it's enjoyable. that said, i'm 12% into the game and i only just got my third weapon. i would love some more variety tbh.

And here I thought "that one GBA Shaman King game that's basically an IGAvania game" was already crazy enough holy shit

It's funny, since there's at least 3 distinct "styles" of Castlevania games:

-Side-scrolling action platformer with levels (NES-SNES era)
-Explore location with items allowing progress (Igavania)
-We have God of War at home (3D titles).

Heck, even with Bloodstained, Iga made 2 versions/styles.

Belmont's Curse is very hard for me to talk to people about, because everyone wanted a new IGAvania and didn't get that.

When the game is good but has some very glaring flaws that need addressed if that team was going to do sequel

It feels like a Castlevania Adjacent game, like if I told someone who was playing Hollow Knight about Castlevania and then asked them to make a game around what I told them

It's a lot more Hollow Knight than Castlevania but it's also more Classicvania than Igavania

It's a weird mishmash of things

Belmont's Curse was fantastic, and I look forward both to the next Igavania and Castlevania games should this series get the breath of fresh air it finally got. Maybe I'll get those collections and play those games, XD

Next year though. Halloween is done for me, time for other things.

The bestiary makes me think of the Igavania games where you can see from the start how many entries there are to fill in.

a good igavania really scratches an itch nothing else does for me

I mean, the Igavania games are well loved. There's a reason people still talk about them, and even speaking personally I'm a big fan of all of them, PoR and Aria especially lol
