Railway entrepreneur William Dargan helped shape Victorian Bray. In 1859 he developed the Esplanade, creating an attractive seafront promenade where visitors could stroll, socialise and enjoy views across the bay.

St Patrick's College was initially leased in 1795 in Stoyte House (formerly on the site of 16th cent. Council Houe) as the focal point of the town, initially on the former, which it remains today

The urban history of Maynooth cannot be separated from its hinterland. Documentary and cartographic evidence reveals a manor comprising parks, mills, fields and tenancies, illustrating how lordship operated through the organisation of both settlement and landscape

Maynooth Castle was not simply a defensive structure but the administrative and symbolic focus of the FitzGerald lordship. The town developed in relation to this centre of seigneurial power, with movement, landholding and economic activity structured around the castle complex.

The eighteenth century witnessed a significant remodelling of Maynooth under the Dukes of Leinster. New streets, regular plots and formal approaches transformed a medieval manorial town into a planned estate settlement, reflecting contemporary ideals of order and improvement

The IHTA team visited Cavan to have a working (and walking) session with Cavan authors, Jonathan Cherry & Brendan Scott.
After visiting the supposed site of the O'Reilly Castle and up Barrack Hill, the derivation of Cavan as a 'hollow place' was very evident!

The boundaries of monastic Kells were marked by monumental sculpture. The High Crosses stood at key points around the precinct and helped define sacred space. They served as visual markers for residents, travellers and pilgrims moving through the settlement

Unlike many medieval towns which developed around markets or castles, Kells grew around a religious foundation. The monastery acted as a centre of worship, learning, administration and exchange, which attracted people to settle around its precinct and created the nucleus of an urban community

According to tradition, St Columba founded a monastery in the 6th cent. Significantly, the monastery occupied an earlier enclosed site whose boundaries continued to influence the layout and curved streets of the later town

The Round Tower remains the dominant monument of the monastic site. Visible across the surrounding countryside, it acted as a landmark within the urban landscape and emphasised the centrality of the church enclosure in the life of the town

Kells derives from the Irish Ceanannas, a name possibly connected with an earlier royal fort or "head fort" (ceann lios). Long before it became a medieval town, the site was an important secular & ecclesiastical centre whose elevated position helped shape later settlement patterns.

We are giggling girls
