it's from Caillois's "Many, Play and Games" (1958, "Les Jeux et Les Hommes"), what he describes as four non-all-encompassing forms of play. to simplify:
- agon: skill, competition, prowess
- alea: luck, fortune, chance
- mimicry: pretend, make-believe, playacting
- ilinx: the body, flip-stomach-fun

Namco used to have a theme park called Wonder Eggs. These are the 4 mascots Argon (green), Alea (purple), Mimicry (blue), and Ilinx (pink). They represent the 4 forms of play and are dragons apparently. I just think they are neat so I put them in a mario kart. Cause like, Namco worked on arcade gp.

(I don't fully agree with you because I think I value ilinx more highly - a sense of transport or pure bodily sensation doesn't really give rise to stories but is a source of joy and I don't wish to ignore that)

I went to an indie gamedev book seminar on thursday. We discussed alea, agon, mimicry and ilinx. We personalized the whiteboard. We shouted, did stretches, became soup based lifeforms, and engaged in pizza carton combat.
I look forward to discussing the next chapters. 😌

Ilinx is the only form of play, actually, because fun is all felt in the gut. The thrill of rolling dice is a gut feeling. Agon doesn't exist without the thrill of possibly making the wrong choice. Even pretending to be your dad or w/e. Game theorists won't tell you this but you're just a stomach.
