I was looking at Reform's policy again the other day. They're proposing a £60k salary for people on ILR keeping their visa. Which means pretty much every nurse on ILR would be a risk. It's insane.
Apropos of nothing, I really do think UK journalists and politicians need some reminding that mass deportation of LEGAL immigrants, particularly those with permanent status, is far more extreme than even Trump's America and would basically place Britain completely on its own among democracies.

- Increase ILR to 10 years,
- Increase Asylum ILR to 20 years,
- Removal "immediately" if your home country becomes "safe,"
- Loss of permanent refugee status,

Would a lot of care workers change occupations after getting ILR? Yes.
But would making them wait 15 years for ILR, but really meaning never, mean they stay as care workers? Absolutely not, people would leave the country en masse. It’s not a job you’d do just for the money you can earn.

Tbh, the whole anti-migrant rhetoric is already making my friends on ILR look at moving.
Of course, they’re all the ones with the money and talent *to* move. Which isn’t what politicians are selling as the consequence of ILR-bashing. But it’s what will happen.

The 10 year wait for Indefinite Leave to Remain will make the UK very unattractive for high skilled workers who often have alternatives. 2019 data (excluding the NHS and universities) shows that high skilled workers on visas are heavily concentrated in multinationals who can move jobs abroad (5/x)

If the Lam amendment had been passed, it would have removed ILR (and made liable to deportation) from someone who arrived here on a work permit in 1971, got ILR in mid-70s, and claimed her pension in 2000.

I've met many people who can't afford to get ILR now nevermind on the other side of these proposals. I don't think many know - especially the all knowing 'comments' section of the Times - that it costs close to £3500 per person to get ILR.
Times argues that Labour sticking to its plans fro remigration and deportation is the only way to stave off Farage - because that's worked so well so far.
There is no appeasing these people, and no point in trying and the sooner govt realises that the better.

If large political parties - the Conservatives, Reform, even some in Labour - argue repeatedly that ILR is no longer a secure or stable status, the logical thing for those with ILR to do is to seek the greater security of citizenship - hence we get a big rise in applications
