A rainy Monday morning, but spending it with lovely ppl at @IMH_UoB's inaugural Mental Health Forum #BeyondTheRoom #IMHForum18

New, porous brackets for MH services in the Global North suggested by @EionKillackey #IMHForum18

Discussing Australian youth mental health, esp headspace https://headspace.org.au/about-us/who-we-are/ #IMHForum18

Really interesting discussions around local est & survival of youth MH services in tiny towns in Gippsland state on Aus's SW coast, & how this might inform how we support young ppl in rural areas. (Worth looking into for UK MH & MH support for phys health.) #IMHForum18

Healthcare formed around 'saving' patients, not asking why they were drowning in the first place, says @PaulBurstow #IMHForum18

Back frm lunch to hear Sophie Dix frm MQ, talking abt the lack of hope & new treatments for mental health. The disparity in funding btwn MH & cancer is HUGE (eg for every £2.75 the public gives to cancer charities, 0.03p goes to MH) #IMHForum18

Sophie Dix setting out the ideals & remit of MQ & the funding & support for research into MH #IMHForum18

Dix underscoring importance of creating a means of prevention & screening for MH issues #IMHForum18

Dix also mentioned Bronwyn Graham's funding - she was working w female animals & noted anxiety related to oestro cycle, but most MH research centred on males (quelle surprise). Her human data suggests wmn are more responsive to CBT at the low point in oestro cycle #IMHForum18

Next up is a Q&A, chaired by Sarah Carr, w ppl w lived experience of MH issues & services #IMHForum18

Hearing abt patients stuck in revolving doors, families banging on the door of psychiatry, professionals chatting abt open doors, & that speaker wants to battle down doors.
NB these are the same doors historians observe in #HistPsych What we keep doing doesn't work. #IMHForum18

Speaker underscoring importance of ward environment & providing purposeful activity.
(Areas where we have gone backwards frm ideals of 19th MH facilities.) #IMHForum18

Final daytime session of #IMHForum18 - a round-table & q&a, 'Transforming the Mental Health Experience for Young People in the West Midlands'

Excellent panel, which is essentially laying out the lived experiences of members as MH workers & researchers - how this has shaped their work & outlook #IMHForum18

Dr John Williams, MD of Birmingham Health Partners, talking abt importance of transdisciplinary work, getting out of silos, & joining up research #IMHForum18

Prof Max Birchwood talking abt the need to create protocols for monitoring, recognising & intervening in the 'ebb & flow' of young ppl's MH, & establishing a kitemark system for schools #IMHForum18
