I resent that people are saying it's just "desk jockies" who were fired from the Forest Service. No. These were field techs and timber markers and people who served on militia fire crews as a collateral duty. They're also the people that keep IMTs running. Logistics, comms, planning, READs etc.

Most/many Federal wildfire supervisors are hitting the pay cap and cannot work OT.... just as Southern California hits peak fire season. This will probably result in hotshot crews and IMTs being shut down.
Congress could fix that, but....

Sure the Trump admin can technically say they didn't fire firefighters. But they *did* fire 3400 people who make firefighters' jobs not only easier but *possible.* You can't do what firefighters do without IMTS—comms, food, logistics, planning etc—or without capacity for emergency support.

I think one clear signal will be how many IMTs are asked to manage multiple fires across a wide area. If we start to see that on the regular, it's bad news because it stretches IMTs and reduces support for complex fires that would traditionally merit a full IMT. 3/3

We'll exhaust resources sooner because there will be fewer of them. This will result in overextension of IMTs and little recovery time for folks between assignments. It will also influence decision-making as the lack of resources will force more indirect strategies. 4/

Those who maintain wildfire qualifications but work in other roles end up being the local response and Initial Attack until non-local resources arrive. They also sometimes fill spots on IMTs (Incident Management Teams). Incomplete IMTs can’t be dispatched- this affects national response.

Our crews have turn-down protocols, where they are free to turn down an assignment they perceive as too risky. Our IMTs need to be thinking the same way and be willing to turn down deployments and refuse agency orders that create unacceptable risk exposure. 12/

Still, I'm going off past experience here and this is the first year post-DOGE and with fewer IMTs, so there may be resource allocation decisions that would have not been considered in previous fire years. 6/6

The same with incident management teams, kitchens, engines, showers, Type 2 crews, etc.
For IMTs, 12 of the 21 currently working fires in the PNW will time out between 7/31 and 8/2. That said, IMTs can more easily be extended by 7 days than other resources. 4/
