For years I assumed this was the first Def Jam release due to the catalog number; DJ001. It turns out that Rick Rubin’s college band, Hose, put out a 12-inch in 1982 with the Def Jam Recordings logo.

This image shows a Technics turntable with a black vinyl record playing. The turntable has a silver body, a clear plastic dust cover, and a tonearm with a white and black stylus resting on the spinning record. The record’s label is reddish-pink with a circular design and text. To the right of the turntable, there is a Def Jam Recordings sleeve, which is maroon with a circular cutout in the center. The sleeve has “DEF JAM” written vertically on the left side, and there is a minimalist line drawing of a turntable tonearm on it. In front of the Def Jam sleeve, there is a miniature boombox replica with tiny dials, speakers, and two antennas sticking up, giving it a retro 1980s aesthetic. The setup is placed on a black shelf, which holds various colorful vinyl record sleeves neatly arranged in the background. The setting suggests a music enthusiast’s space, highlighting a love for vinyl records and classic hip-hop culture.
