An IOPC investigation found no evidence of tactical contact or stinger use before the A66 crash that killed two police officers and five others last month.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has said the Metropolitan Police's Directorate of Professional Standards should investigate the force's handling of its contact with Nicholas Brandram, the man arrested in connection with the 2017 Putney Bridge attack. The IOPC received a mandatory referral from the Met on 16 September, following Brandram's death the previous day. Brandram, 44, was arrested in June 2026 on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident, in which a woman was pushed into the path of an approaching bus. He was subsequently released under investigation without being charged. He was also arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A and Class B drugs. The IOPC said its investigation should consider several aspects of the Met's conduct, including whether Brandram's arrest was necessary and proportionate, the force's engagement with the media, and the consideration given to his welfare and relevant police policy. The watchdog's decision means the Met's own professional standards directorate will conduct the investigation, rather than the IOPC itself carrying out the full investigation. Brandram was found dead at his home in Chiswick, west London, on 15 September. An inquest heard that his death was not considered suspicious and that there was no evidence of third-party involvement. His family has said that he took his own life after experiencing what they described as months of intense pressure arising from the police investigation. They have called for the review to be thorough, independent and focused on establishing what went wrong. The original Putney Bridge incident occurred in 2017. CCTV showed a male jogger pushing a 33-year-old woman into the path of a bus. The driver swerved and narrowly avoided hitting her; the woman suffered minor injuries. The footage was widely circulated and the case remained unresolved for years. The Met has said its investigation into the original incident remains ongoing following Brandram's death.
