Breaking News!
Code: UFB!!!

On October 29, 2026, the 4-year running average for the global surface temperature anomaly hit 1.500°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC pre-industrial baseline (Copernicus data).

Next up: the 5-year running average.

In IPCC land, 1.3°C sounds right.
Multiple datasets, delayed 10 year running average, and then lowballed, for good measure.
Will IPCC AR7 show global warming below 1.5°C?

My attempt to predict this, based on past AR reports, data, and a projected warm end to 2026 and even warmer 2027.

A semi-subjective concept graphic suggesting the IPCC will continue to report 5+ years behind what the world is experiencing.

Good read! I also really recommend this article by J-B Fressoz from 2025 on CCS in the IPCC.

One thing that worries me more than anything is that the dire financial situation for the IPCC makes it deeply vulnerable to the contingent of the climate science world that LOVES fossil-fuelled low-quality analyslop and would replace the hard work of the IPCC with a shitty chatbot in a heartbeat.

I recommend this great complimentary article to the one in Propublica with a wider focus and longer time span on IPCC-CCS development written by Fessoz in 2025.

Ironically, most of the countries that want to delay the next IPCC report have contributed nothing to the IPCC financially for years, if ever. 🙄
October 27, 2026 at 5:15 PM
I was recently asked if we should replace the IPCC with something less flawed. My answer is that nothing else could inspire top scholars worldwide to volunteer years of their lives to produce a definitive source on the state of our climate, impacts, and solutions. We have to fund the IPCC.
October 27, 2026 at 5:09 PM
You could fund the IPCC for the next half-century with a miniscule fraction of the amount of money that's been poured into absurd, hypey AI/climate start-ups *just this year*

We've got some absurd, messed up priorities at the moment

IPCC authors meet in Tanzania to advance work on the report on physical science of climate change.

The meeting is hosted by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through the Tanzanian Meteorological Authority and runs from 2 to 6 November 2026.

model for the development of other IAMs. The DICE model is definitely not disinformation, though one can -- as I do -- disagree with how Nordhaus used it to provide policy advice. Without DICE and IAMs, much of the social science work of the IPCC and others would be inconceivable. Setting all that

When I taught climate change mitigation, the reliance on CCS and especially BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) in the IPCC reports always felt "off" to me given my work on ethanol. But I'm not a geologist and I trusted the CC mitigation options the IPCC pushed. What a disappointment.
How a Secret Vote by U.N. Scientists Legitimized Carbon Capture and Skewed Decades of Climate Policy
A U.N. report concluded carbon capture could offset fossil fuels’ effect on climate change. Two decades later, the process has failed to meaningfully scale up, and it’s proving hard to take the promis...
