We'll be able to do it better & cheaper they said. #nzpol

Should have stuck with iREX huh? Both boats would be in commercial revenue service by now along with two terminals built as 100 year assets not 5 minute do minimums NACT1 gave us.
October 28, 2026 at 6:05 PM
The iRex ones could also be converted to full electric, if I remember correctly.

Yet another way this government is binding us to a dying fuel that's killing us all.
October 29, 2026 at 7:34 AM
So we're almost at the same cost for iRex or maybe even more and yet we still have...
*checks notes* No boats.

iREX is also very personal to me as we lost our sub contract to the boats and terminals when Willis cancelled it in 2023

The ripple effects of lost income then are still being felt in 2026
The ferries just frustrate me so much, not in the least because it would be complete NOW, and cost less, had they just stuck with the original plan.

And don't come at me with "we can't afford it" because we bloody well can if we reformed our tax system. But y'all won't do that even.

Labour had ordered Ferries and started Irex infrastructure at Picton.

The cost is $1.9 (some of that funding comes from ports and NZTA) but that excludes contingency and excludes the $650m sunk costs of iRex. So at the end of the day the cost of the same as iRex with less functionality, no business case and likely to also have cost overruns. 😫
October 29, 2026 at 12:42 AM
The new ships are a step down in scale — 200m vs 220m length, 28m vs 30.8m beam, and 1,530 vs 1,910 passengers — while costing $45m more on the headline contract, arriving three years later, and sitting atop $671m of sunk iReX costs. And who knows when they will arrive. 2029, 2030, 2031?

"This government are delivering worse ferries and ports three years later that cost the same or more than iRex, which would have been in operation today."

"They've cut corners, shifted costs to ratepayers, because they believe new Zealand doesn't deserve high quality infrastructure"
October 28, 2026 at 11:25 PM
Just who is "out of whack"?
New Zealand would have had new Irex ferries by now, had a spiteful Willis & Co. not canceled them.

How much more taxpayer money will they waste?!
October 28, 2026 at 9:18 PM
There's a reason the original iREX plan cost a lot ... because doing infrastructure, particularly critical infrastructure, correctly (ie doing what it needs to do) COSTS MONEY.

The CRL is an example of a success in part because it was built as it needed to be. It's not gold plated.

Nicky NoBoats still hasn't delivered a single new Cook Strait Ferry.

We would have had both iReX rail-enabled ferries in NZ by now if National had not cancelled them.

15 months to get a ferry decision from this government which shows they did no research before cancelling iRex

$4b sounds exorbitant, but compared to the $2.8b NZ is currently spending to get smaller, delayed ships and patchy port repairs, the extra $1.2b for iReX would have bought 50+ years of earthquake-resilient supply chain security. It’s 70% the cost for 40% the resilience. NZ is bad at infrastructure.
October 29, 2026 at 3:44 AM
The research I have done indicates the replacement programme is a fresh ~$1.7 billion of Crown money on top of the $671 million already sunk on iReX. So roughly 2.5 times the sunk cost, and about $2.4 billion of public money combined before counting ratepayer contributions. In short – less for more.
October 29, 2026 at 12:37 AM
That's also assuming iReX would have blown out to 4b, which was at (maybe even above?) the top end of their scenario estimates.

The whole ferry debacle makes me so angry as a long term South Islander but as raised in Wellington. It’s a dangerous stretch of water. It’s a vital connection for the country. Felt so hopeful about Irex then Willis kicked us in the guts. I hope she’s around to be accused when there is ferry trouble.

"...pointed to several risk factors" including "...time & cost expectations by government, & failing to complete the infrastructure upgrades before the ships' arrival."

They didn't even compare the viability of existing infrastructure before cancelling 100yr proof iRex for the 30-70yr new plan?
October 29, 2026 at 12:28 AM
Bad enough that iRex had value-engineered out fripperies like covered pedestrian links to the boats in Wellington's serene climate.

So in 2029 we get two new smaller ferries for a higher price than the two new bigger ferries, with ports that will do for now but which the government will need to invest more in future to keep them viable along the original iRex 50-100 year upgrade timeline.

So paying more, for less, longer.
