I'm very excited for when Apple will have to begin digging into some of the more obscure California landmarks to name their OSes.

Very happy and honored for being invited to give a keynote lecture at the 5th ISFSI conference in beautiful Tainan (and no, sea anemones are not fish or shellfish, but they are certainly marine invertebrates and have a fascinating immune system).

I would literally live right next door to a dry cask storage pad with my family, and I would gladly perform daily ISFSI walkdowns and complete all reporting requirements for benefits and ~$100k a year. I would just need 1-2 people who could cover my rounds during vacations. Easy.
Nobody wants to live near nuclear waste. The Supreme Court mulls where to put it
The case could shape the future of how America handles radioactive nuclear waste.

Picture of fire approaching Oyster Creek. It's been shut down for a few years now, but there is still spent fuel on-site in the ISFSI. Fire has passed with no damage on site.

This is the governor of Arizona standing next to the ISFSI dry casks at Palo Verde. She is almost certainly receiving more dose from the sun than she is from the used fuel in the casks.

IMHO, that's not the problem with ISFSIs.
1) They are potential targets in a nuclear war. Entraining an ISFSI in the fireball would effectively "salt the earth" downwind for hundreds to thousands of years.
2) We should be reprocessing our spent fuel.

I encourage you to look into ISFSI storage casks for spent fuel, as well as other long term storage methods used in Europe.

Nuclear has its flaws, but the spent fuel isn't necessarily the problem. Like any other thermal power plant design, it relies on steam, so there is thermal pollution.

Yes, it would be expensive. No, you can't just walk in and throw the On switch.

But I don't think "sitting idle for six years" quite captures the current plant status.

Here's what Constellation told the NRC in Oct 2024.

From a physical disposition standpoint, no. From a legal standpoint, absolutely. The ISFSI license for a decommed plant comes from the original plant. ISP operates under a different licensing authority. And in this case, that is an important distinction even if it seems a bit silly to make.

Maine Yankee is a bit different given that their ISFSI was part of the original plant licensing structure. Other decommissioned plants (Big Rock, LaCrosse) are in a similar boat. True off-site storage has existed for a long time though.

Where, for that matter, the NRC absolutely has authority to put the ISFSI

this is an away-from-reactor ISFSI, right? that's pretty retrievable or am I missing something
